Maintaining Equilibrium: How Inner Ear Changes Affect Balance and What You Can Do About It

0

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” – Mark Twain.

In the last year or so, specifically since taking up Jiu Jitsu, I have noticed a change in my equilibrium, not that I am having trouble maintaining balance. Still, when I do break rolls (forward or back), once I stop, it takes a little bit for my sense of balance to catch. The body stops rolling, but the head still feels like it is. This feeling stops within a few seconds, but it isn’t reassuring. I can still happily do cartwheels down the training hall. There is no ‘physical’ issue. I just need to stop for a few seconds afterwards to let my head settle back into place.

As to why that happens, well, it’s all a part of the grand ballet of life, friends. Have you ever witnessed a dog shaking itself wildly after coming out of water? Strangely enough, this is similar to what our inner ears do when they experience a sudden change in velocity or position.

Let me paint you an illustrative picture. Picture the cups and tubes inside our ears as a dazzling, intricate network of water slides at a theme park. When we perform actions like a head-tilting forward roll or a dizzying helicopter spin on the dance floor, we essentially send our “inner ear bathers”, the collection of sensory cells and fluids, rushing through these slides. Once we stop, the bathers are still zooming and splashing about, processing the tail end of the fun-filled ride. Like a rubber duck bobbing in a whirlpool, everything takes a few moments to still after the action ceases. In real life, that’s your sense of balance playing catch up, catching its metaphorical breath, if you will, before addressing the world once more.

The bummer here is that the water park gets a bit of a battering as we age. The exuberance of youth fades, the slides get a bit rusty, the bathers get a tad sluggish. The fancy way to put it? Age-related changes to our inner ears dull the razor-sharp reaction times we enjoyed during our sprightly years. These changes can result in the occasional somewhat disorienting feeling of ‘head spins’ as the poor old noggin struggles to compute the sudden transition. After all, it’s only trying to keep up with the ever-enthusiastic pace our bodies insist on maintaining.

Balance and Equilibrium as a measure of ‘quality of life’

I believe Peter Attica talks about the ability to stand on one foot and put on your shoes as a good measure of your ability to balance, not fall over, and, if you do, get back up. In older people, it becomes a genuine concern if you lose the ability to safely shift levels from standing to sitting, to crouching, lying, etc. Being aware of and maintaining our sense of balance becomes increasingly important as a measure of not only our ‘health’, but our quality of life and level of independence in the world. While I am a long way off from being unable to get myself off the floor (technical stand-ups are still going well in training!) I can see the long-term path there.

The Inner Ear – A Mini Anatomy Lesson

Before diving into our journey of maintaining equilibrium, let’s have a mini anatomy lesson. Our inner ear, the vestibular labyrinth to be exact – and yes, it’s as twisty as it sounds – comprises three semi-circular canals and two otolith organs.

  • Semi-circular canals are the three fluid-filled tubes, each responsible for detecting different types of head movements.
  • Otolith organs (the utricle and the saccule): These two lads monitor the position of your head relative to gravity and dynamic linear movements, such as in a car or on a rollercoaster.

So, when these elements work harmoniously, they create a symphony of stability. Yet, quite like a punk rocker crashing a string quartet mid-performance, the balance of this harmony can sway with age, affecting our dear friend balance along the way.

The Ageing Process: How it Affects the Inner Ear

So, we’ve skimmed the surface of the inner ear’s complexity, but the plot thickens as we grow older. It’s almost as if the inner ear declares, “Ageing? Now, that’s my cue to stir the pot!”

As we age, the cells within our inner ear — mainly the hair cells, begin to feel the weight of time. These cells, which act like little conductors leading the symphony of signals to our brain, slowly lose their stamina and vitality. When these diligent workers start to ‘retire’, equilibrium can become as challenging as a drunken flamingo on roller skates. That’s where the trouble begins.

Tales from the Vestibular System

Picture it: your once robust vestibular system entering a mid-life crisis. The ability to maintain balance, generally taken for granted, suddenly becomes a precarious task. Why? You may ask. It’s mainly due to the gradual degeneration of those oh-so-crucial hair cells and some other fun tweaks within your vestibular system — the part of the inner ear responsible for balance.

Think of it like this: Your once high-performance, equilibrium-maintaining system is now more of a clunky, old pickup truck’s suspension — struggling with bumps and sudden manoeuvres. But don’t fret; we’re all aboard the same shaky boat!

Our topic of discussion might seem as obscured as a cave bat’s sense of colour, but take it from me; it’s no less important. You see, the inner ear, that compact labyrinth housing your auditory and balance apparatus, gets a bit — how do I put it delicately — forgetful as we age. Like that old, half-deflated tennis ball you’ve meant to replace, it simply doesn’t bounce back like it used to.

There’s a unique and intricate relationship between changes in your inner ear and your ability to balance. This is akin to a wobbly table in a rickety old pub; fine while you’re observing, but the moment you compel it to function, you’ve got yourself a tipsy disaster.

Dissecting the Dance: Inner Ear Changes and Equilibrium

The marvellously made-up term for this delicate spin cycle of balance is ‘vestibular compensation’. Your brain and inner ear execute this dance flawlessly, but when your inner ear starts to lose its pep, your sense of balance takes a nosedive. Think of it as a relay race. The inner ear passes the baton of information to the brain, and a healthy stride is maintained. If that baton is a tad slippery (or, in this case, the messages become compromised), our runner stumbles and the race goes pear-shaped.

Facing the Music: Inner Ear and Balance Disorders

Our dear maturing bodies can give rise to all manner of pickles, chief among them being inner ear disorders. Vertigo, tinnitus, and Meniere’s disease are not precisely a roll-off-the-tongue party list and are as pleasant as stepping barefoot on a LEGO brick. Bear with me as I bring you into the loop in an impossibly witty and less scientific fashion.

  1. Vertigo: This is more than just a fantastic Hitchcock movie. Vertigo is a dizzying disorder that could make you feel like you’ve sipped one too many at happy hour when, in fact, you’re sober as a judge.
  2. Tinnitus is the immoveable squatter in your inner ear, producing a constant ringing sound. I wish you could, but I’m afraid you can’t evict this one with a strongly worded letter.
  3. Meniere’s Disease: This is an unpleasant guest that brings along hearing loss, tinnitus (yes, that rascal from above), and a fiesta of vertigo. Remember that it’s not nice to have an unwanted guest show up with friends.

One can adopt preventive measures to lessen the impact of these changes. However, it all hinges upon understanding what’s going on with our balance system. In the upcoming sections, we’ll delve into the means at our disposal for early detection and prevention, and, without a doubt, I’ll have plenty more metaphors to share. Buckle up, folks!

Taking Control: Preventive Measures for Inner Ear Changes

Now that we’ve tiptoed our way around the noisy tavern that is the inner ear let’s make a swift segue into how we can turn down the volume on age-related changes. Because, my dear readers, if the choice is between facing the music and changing the record entirely, I’d choose B-side any day!

Who said ageing can’t be fun, eh?

Avoid Loud Noises Like the Plague

Avoidance of loud noises – If you didn’t get the message the first time, let me tell you again. The ears might not be the pathway to the soul, but damaging them can get you a one-way ticket to interfering with your balance.

Ditch the Cig, Embrace the Twig

Quit smoking – This one’s a no-brainer, but just in case you’ve missed it, smoking is a complete horror show for the entire body, not to mention your inner ear. It’s like having a demolition expert inside your body with a penchant for chaos. Out with the cigarette, in with the treadmill, dear comrades!

Attend to Your Cooling System

Manage diseases – It’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to ageing, but ignoring conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes can turn up the heat in the inner ear. This poor chap is radar-sensitive to such fluctuations. Have you ever left your car in the sun without cranking up the AC? Well, that’s a rough illustration for you. So, take your meds, see your GP, and keep your ‘cooling system’ in check.

Exercise: A Love Story

Become physically active – I get it. Netflix binges are tempting; sometimes, it feels like the couch has a magnetic pull. But even the cells in the inner ear are Ferris Bueller fans, and they love a day off. So turn off the TV, put on those trainers, and get your body moving. It’s time to show your balance that it’s not just an adventure on the high seas you can handle, but life’s little bumps, too.

Remember, prevention is better than cure.

So, shall we raise our cups to age like a fine wine? Utterly balanced!

Maintaining Balance: Exercise and Physical Activities

Let me babble on about exercises. Not the dreary, tedious acts of punishing bodily mortification enacted in dull, airless gymnasiums, but fun, lively sorts of movement that engage the body and spirit. Maintaining balance as we age requires an energetic and eclectic mix of activities.

The Role of The Gentlemanly Stomp – Walking

First up is the gentlest of all exercises – walking. It’s nothing more than a gentle stomp, after all. As if you’re crushing grapes for wine, but on a long production line. Walking reduces the risk of various age-related ailments but also gives the vestibular system quite the workout. In addition, walking aids in blood circulation, which is beneficial for our dear inner ears. Hence, my friends, a brisk walk is not just a stroll in the park – it’s your vestibular boot camp!

Yoga: The Embrace of The Serene Pretzel

Let’s take a moment to discuss yoga – the age-old tradition of transforming one’s body into the shape of a serene pretzel. The practice improves flexibility, which, trust me, is beneficial as body parts start to feel like uncooperative rusty cogs and improve balance. Holding a tree pose, with roots dug into our metaphorical earth and branches reaching the cosmos, can make a difference. It’s today’s tree pose and the graceful withdrawal of the ‘I’ve-forgotten-my-reading-specs’ stumble tomorrow.

While I wouldn’t say I have a ‘Yoga Practice’ – it’s true that once or twice a week, I will be working through a sequence of upward and downward-facing dogs while I try to get some more movement going on in these old limbs of mine.

The Delights of Pilates and Tai Chi

Other exercise routines that deserve an honourable mention, akin to the shy but brilliant cousin at family reunions, are Pilates and Tai Chi. Pilates, named after its creator, Joseph Pilates (say it with me now, Pee-lah-tees), is notorious for engaging the core and building stability. Meanwhile, Tai Chi, the beautiful dance of serene kung fu, improves balance and flexibility. So there you have it – two more invitations to the party of balance maintenance.

Potentially little-known fact – I spent more than a few years getting up every day at 5 am to do Tai Chi with a group of like-minded crazy lads. These days, it’s Jiu Jitsu.

In conclusion, the key to maintaining balance as we stack the candles on the birthday cake is a solid routine of these varied exercises. An additional suggestion, my fine comrades, is to approach these routines with the unabashed enthusiasm of a Labrador with a tennis ball. For it’s not just the act itself but the joy we take in it that makes the significant difference.

Dietary Choices for a Healthy Inner Ear

Eating right is like choosing the correct dance partner. You want someone who complements your moves, and the same principle applies to nutrients – they must complement your body’s needs. After all, you wouldn’t waltz around the floor with a partner who kept stepping on your toes. Likewise, certain nutrients can help keep your inner ear healthy and maintain your balance, while others might occasionally trip you up.

Look, Betty! B’s and More B’s!

Rather like the glee you feel on a beach holiday, B vitamins (think B6, B9, and B12) are necessary for inner ear health. They aid in creating red blood cells, which aren’t just engaged in the vital job of oxygen transport. They also have an enviable sideline gig assisting our ‘vestibular system, ‘ the fancy term for the bits of our inner ear that keep us straight and narrow. But hold your beach balls! Our bodies can’t store these vitamins. So, it’s essential to top up on foods rich in B vitamins, such as spinach, asparagus, and beans. You know, all that good stuff your mum told you about.

C Dancing with A

Remember that school dance you attended, where everyone was doing the trendy dances, and you pulled out the twist? Well, vitamins C and A are a bit like that – classic, yet essential. These antioxidants work in tandem, much like an impeccably choreographed waltz, warding off free radicals that cause oxidative stress and cellular damage, a regular party pooper for your inner ear cells. Think of citrus fruits, strawberries, carrots, and dark leafy greens for a heady dose of these antioxidant powerhouses. You’ll be twisting and shouting for joy at their benefits.

Fatty Acids: The Ballerinas of the Inner Ear

Few things are as graceful as a ballerina. Their poise, their precision, their ability to spin around in circles without toppling over – quite remarkable, eh? Omega-3 fatty acids are the ballerinas of the inner ear. They keep inflammation at bay and protect delicate inner ear cells from damage. Getting enough omega-3s is as simple as incorporating fatty fish, nuts, and seeds into your diet. Just call it the “Swan Lake snack pack”.

All these nutrients combine into an intricate dance essential for your inner ear health. But remember, each individual’s dance floor, aka the body, is unique. So, before attempting any swift dietary footwork, have a word with your doctor or a dietitian. Too much of some nutrients can be just as harmful as too little.

Holistic Approaches: Alternative Therapies for Inner Ear Changes

Now, if you’re a bit more New Age and the phrase’ alternative therapy’ doesn’t make you run for the hills screaming, then considering holistic approaches to maintain inner ear health as you age is the spice of life you’ve been looking for. Shy of an all-singing, all-dancing ear reconstruction, you can try a few non-traditional methods. Let’s dive in, feet first, into the world of holistic remedies for maintaining equilibrium in the golden years, shall we?

Acupuncture: The Ear’s Equivalent of a Spa Retreat

If you’re game for pointy things (I prefer my pointy things in the form of a sharp cheddar but to each their own), acupuncture is worth a shot. This ancient Chinese practice involves strategically inserting needles into specific points on the ear associated with balance. Before you start impersonating a hedgehog, rest assured that the process is relatively painless and is often reported to help improve balance. Much like a sushi dinner, it’s best served by a professional, so leave the needlework to the experts.

Herbal Supplements: The Inner Ear’s Salad Bar

More of a health nut? Good on you! There’s a veritable buffet of herbal supplements out there that may assist in maintaining inner ear health. But just like an unleashed toddler at a candy store, don’t go too wild. Consultation with a healthcare professional beforehand is advisable. Some promising upstarts in the herbal world include Ginkgo Biloba, thought to improve blood flow to the inner ear, and ginger, celebrated for its anti-inflammatory properties. Remember, supplements are like the sidekick to a healthy diet, not the leading role.

Massage and Chiropractic Adjustments: Personal Service for Your Ear’s Innards

Maybe your issues are more alignment-related, the ear equivalent of modern art that’s just one squinty eye off from being a masterpiece. Massage and chiropractic adjustments might give you that nudge back into place. These hands-on therapies are believed to reduce tension and improve circulation, which can impact inner ear function. Allow yourself the self-indulgence of a good knead and crack. After all, if your ears can’t treat themselves after years of service, who can?

Remember, folks, the objective is to maintain equilibrium as we age, not to turn you into a Zen master or a human shish kebab. So, try a few things and see what works for you. Like a good gin, experimentation is the spice of life… or was that variety? Well, both work in this instance!

In Summary

We’ve taken quite a whistle-stop tour through the realms of the inner ear, ageing, and balance. We’ve covered a lot of ground – and you’re still here, which is a good start!

Let’s cast our minds back a pace, shall we? We’ve delved into the labyrinthine wonders of the inner ear, tackling the plucky vestibular system and teasing out the connection between changes in this rather remarkable organ and our irksome bouts of imbalance as we age.

We’ve arm-wrestled with the biology, getting our hands dirty with the inner ear’s neat – albeit slightly labyrinthine – architecture. We shared a couple of cringe-worthy balance stories that, speaking personally, had me clutching onto the nearest lamppost. Ah, the joys of ageing. A codger’s life for me.

Now, heralding preventative measures, we’ve championed everything from the gentlemanly stomp to the serene pretzel. It makes you want to break into some impromptu yoga amidst a Tuesday afternoon board meeting. But we’ve done more than that, oh yes, more. We’ve embraced the dietary equivalent of a veritable smorgasbord of nutrients, vitamins, and whatnot.

We’ve waxed lyrical about the apparent perks for your inner ear of subjecting yourself to the carefully placed piercings of acupuncture and the even more carefully arranged array served by your crackerjack local salad bar. No wonder my ears have been craving that crisp, green crunch.

So, here’s the crux of things: an important, albeit slightly dramatic, climax – change is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean equilibrium must go the way of dodos and decent wig styles. With a bit of forethought, the proper upkeep, and the occasional serene pretzel, hitting a balance isn’t an insurmountable obstacle—it’s just a judicious game of one-legged hopscotch. So, let us keep our strides steady, our footing sure, and our inner ears happy. And with that, I think we’re ready to face the music again.

For me, it will be a case of trying some supplementation and trying to help my inner ear keep up with my body!

2023 Jetboil Cooking Systems: Which One is Right for You?

0

Initially, it was just one model; now, there are multiples – with slight specialisations that are important to understand. This article gives you a quick overview of how the Jetboil system works and guides you to the correct model for your use.

Key Features of Jetboil Cooking Systems

So, what makes Jetboil systems truly stand out? Don’t worry, dear readers; the good news is that I have crunched the details – so you don’t have to! Let’s dive in.

There are a few key features that all Jetboil cooking systems have in common which assert their dominance in the tramping cooking system market:

  • Hyperefficient heat transfer: This is where Jetboil systems shine. They have integrated pot and burner designs, which direct the heat straight into the pot (and not into the chilly air around your site). This means faster boil times and less gas used – essential for long treks where every ounce of backpack weight counts!
  • Compact design: Space is at a premium when you’re out in the wild, and Jetboil gets that. With every part designed to nest within the pot, their cooking systems are compact, easy to pack, and won’t take up precious backpack real estate.
  • Easy to use: Jetboil designs their appliances with ease of use in mind, from instant ignition (no need for matches) to easy-adjust heat controls. Everyone loves a hot meal after a long day’s hike – even those of us who are slightly technophobic! Those are the common features but keep in mind each model has its unique attributes – like the lightweight minimalist design of the Jetboil Zip or the larger capacity of the Jetboil Minimo. Those are the kinds of details we should delve deeper into!  We aren’t leaving you high and dry trying to figure it all out. As is customary, we are here to help decipher it all. Stay tuned for a detailed comparison of the latest models, complete with potential scenarios where each one might shine. We promise it’ll make you more prepared for your next tramping adventure!

Comparing the 2023 Jetboil Cooking Systems

Let’s delve into the specifics of the 2023 Jetboil cooking systems models; more specifically, we’ll be looking at the Zip, Flash 2.0, MicroMo, MiniMo, Sumo,  and Stash Cooking System

If the goal is to tread lightly on your trek, you might want to glance towards the Zip model of Jetboil’s 2023 offerings. Small and minimalist in design, the Zip is designed with solo travellers in mind – it’s perfect for those quick trips when all you need is a reliable hot drink or single-serving ‘boil in a bag’ or dehydrated meal. Ideal for the minimalist backpacker who values simplicity and efficiency above all.

The Flash 2.0 model, while slightly heavier than the Zip, offers a touch of technological brilliance. The unique thermochromatic colour-change heat indicator is your cooking coach – a glance can tell you exactly how hot your meal is. This model is well-suited for those who appreciate instant feedback on their cooking. Perhaps you’re a precise cook or love a gadget; this could be your choice.

Are you meticulous about what’s in your backpack, yet refuse to compromise on flavour? The MicroMo may be your perfect companion. Exceptionally lightweight with precise simmer control, this model is an excellent fit for any weight-conscious backpacker who still loves a gourmet meal at the end of a long day. Just because you’re on the trail doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy great food, right?

The MiniMo ranks a bit higher in weight but has seen some thoughtful redesign. With an improved valve design and cooking cup, it offers a controlled simmer for the gourmet cook in disguise. If you like to flex your cooking muscles even while camping, then the MiniMo is the Jetboil model to consider. This is the perfect system for those who don’t want their culinary creativity to be limited by their camping gear

If you’re the designated cook for a small group, though, the Sumo is tailored to meet your needs. With its large capacity, it’s optimized for group cooking, making it that much easier to provide hot meals or drinks for your entire crew. Solo adventurers might find it more than they need, but if you regularly find yourself cooking for several people at a time, the Sumo is well worth a look.

Finally, if the main aim is to reduce as much weight as possible while staying self-sufficient, the Stash Cooking System is ahead of the pack in the 2023 range. An integrated all-in-one system that screams ‘ultralight’, the Stash is a one-step solution for any hiker where every gram matters. With the Stash in your pack, you’re making a declaration: light load, high mobility, no compromises.

What is a regulator?

A regulator, in the realm of gas-powered camp stoves like the Jetboils we’re chatting about, is kind of like the traffic controller of fuel flow. Imagine a road with cars zooming down it willy-nilly. Without traffic lights (our gas regulator here), there would be chaos. A regulator ensures  the fuel, or cars in our scenario, gets to the burner (the final destination) in a controlled and steady way. This helps to ensure an optimal performance in the Jetboil stoves, regardless of the fuel amount or the weather conditions.

This also means that if you’re out venturing in chilly conditions or your fuel canister is running on empty, you won’t see a significant drop off in performance. Your Jetboil is still going to get you that hot cup of cocoa at the end of a long day. The regulator is a tiny yet crucial part of the Jetboil system, ensuring consistent stove performance regardless of the weather or fuel level.

You see, the gas regulator has a certain ‘gatekeeper’ quality about it. Its prime function is to control the pressure of the gas as it travels from the canister to the stove. Imagine it like this: without a regulator, the gas is a herd of overexcited sheep rushing out of a gate. The resultant chaos can lead to inconsistent heating and inefficient fuel use. By contrast, a regulator acts as a shepherd guiding these metaphorical sheep at a steady pace, providing a consistent flame regardless of fuel level or environmental conditions.

But how does this translate into better gas flow? Well, gas – just like any other material- behaves differently under different temperature conditions. In low temperatures, its pressure decreases. Hence, if you are out up in the frosty mountaintops, without a regulator, your stove might not perform as expected. It’s the hard truth that we all discovered in our early days of tramping. But chuck a regulator into the mix, and voila! It maintains a steady gas flow by compensating for the lower pressure, so even at freezing temperatures, your stove doesn’t falter. It’s a game-changer, truly.

Now, as with most things in life, there are some limitations to the magic of regulators. The higher you go, the less they can compensate for the thin air. However, within typical tramping altitudes, you can expect a consistent output, regardless of conditions, resulting in a trusty Jetboil experience I’m sure you’re eager to have!

How does it differ across 2023 models?

So now you’re thinking, “Great, but how does this play into my decision about which 2023 model to buy?” Firstly, let me tell you, you’re asking all the right questions. Here’s the inside scoop on what you need to know:

  • Jetboil Flash and Zip 2.0 : These units do have a regulator, but it’s a more basic version. It’ll still do the job of keeping your fuel flow steady, but might not provide as much control as the models that come with an advanced regulator.
  • Jetboil Minimo, MicroMo and Sumo: These models sport an advanced regulator offering a wider range of heat options. This is perfect if you’re looking to whip up more than a simple boil-in-the-bag meal.
  • Jetboil Stash: This unit saves weight by not having a regulator on it.

The ‘Advanced Regulator’ – i.e. Simmer Control

Allow me to introduce you to the ‘Advanced Regulator’ A.K.A Simmer Control. This amazing feature isn’t just a fancy term that Jetboil threw into the mix, it’s a kitchen on the go. You’re probably thinking, ‘Simmer control? How does that work on a camping stove?’ Fair enough question.

Simmer control is essentially about finely adjusting the intensity of the flame. Where a basic regulator only gives you an small amount of control, and generally not much on the lower side of things, an advanced regulator like Jetboil’s allows you to control the intensity of the heat that your cooking system produces, kind of like your kitchen stove’s knob control. This means you can simmer your tomato soup without scorching the bottom.

When it comes to the 2023 line-up of Jetboil systems, there are three models – the Minimo, the MicroMo and Sumo – come equipped with this premium feature. If you’re someone who cooks a range of dishes while camping or has a knack for slow-cooked meals, this feature is a godsend.

Not only does this allow for more precise cooking, but it also delivers fuel efficiency.

Boiling Water vs Cooking in a Pot

It’s important to understand a fundimental ‘usuage’ differnce between the options. Unregulated or, basic regulation really leans itself towards boiling water (it’s hard to burn!) or boil in a bag type cooking. Essentially, the Jetboil concept was originaly focused on quickly and effiecntly boiling water that you would then use to rehydrate your meals.

However, as Jetboil expanded its offerings, they recognised that trampers often prefer simmer-like cooking. And thus, they introduced models with ‘Advanced Regulators’. These provide stable, controllable heat down for a more controlled, even flame which simmers rather than basically ‘full-bore’ or ‘off’.

Comparing the Stash to the rest of the range

So, now let’s throw the spotlight onto the Jetboil Stash and see how it pegs against the rest of the range, shall we? One of the outstanding characteristics of the Stash is its lightweight attribute, and this lighter weight is primarily due to the reduced fuel flow it sports.

Because it doesn’t have a regular, the design results in the Jetboil Stash having a slower gas flow rate, which results in a bit slower boiling times compared to the rest of the Jetboil models. While this might initially seem like a drawback, consider this. Lower fuel flow means slower boil times, but not necesarily worse fuel efficency. In essence, it gives you the advantage of a lighter backpack while not drastically affecting your cooking experience.

I can hear the cogs whirring in your mind – you’re weighing the pros and cons, aren’t you? Well, slower boil times and a lightweight feature might seem conflicting at first. However, if you’re up for that longer-than-usual wait for a boiling cup of soup or coffee, and if a lighter pack is higher up on your priorities, the Stash could turn out to be your ideal cooking companion on the trail.

In conclusion, while the Stash may boil your water for meals a tad slower, the trade-off comes with the significant benefit of reduced weight to carry. It extends an unmissable advantage to those hiking long distances or attempting to streamline their pack weight.

But wouldn’t an unregulated flow mean more gas and better flame?

Well, you might think that initially – I did too. But, in reality, unrestricted gas flow doesn’t guarantee a stronger flame. It’s all about control.

Consider driving a car. If you consistently push the pedal to the metal, you’re not necessarily going to get the best performance. You’ll burn through fuel at an alarming rate, and in certain conditions, it could even be detrimental to your engine. It’s about finding the right balance

Similarly, in a Jetboil system, if gas flow is unregulated, there’s a higher chance of the flame being extinguished during windy conditions. You also can wave goodbye to any dreams of simmering your beans without scorching them. Not to mention, inefficient burning of fuel isn’t great for our dear Mother Nature.

A regulator comes to the rescue in such scenarios. It allows for optimal gas flow, adjusting according to varying external factors such as temperature drop and fuel level. This ensures a consistent flame, better cooking control, and efficient fuel use.

Which one for you?

Making a choice between these stellar Jetboil systems is no easy feat, but it all boils down to your unique needs and preferences. If you’re a fan of lightweight equipment, and water-boiling speed isnt your ultimate priority, then the Jetboil Stash could be your perfect tramping buddy. It’s the lightest of the lot and, while it lacks an advanced regulator, its efficiency in boiling water is quite impressive.

However, if you fancy the idea of creating culinary delights on your adventures and appreciate precise control of your cooking flame, then the Jetboil systems equipped with the advanced regulators are the ones to consider. Having upgraded simmer control at hand opens up the door to a wider array of dishes you can whip up in the great outdoors

So, whether you’re looking to upgrade your current setup, or you’re purchasing a tramping cooking system for the first time, Jetboil offers options for everyone. Balance your needs with the features of these models, and you’ll find the perfect cooking companion for your outdoor adventures.

Understanding Wind Terms for Fishing: A Beginner’s Guide to ‘Onshore’ and ‘Offshore’ Explained

0

Let’s delve into some basic terminologies related to wind and fishing. The terms’ onshore’ and ‘offshore’ probably ring a bell, even if you’ve been too nervous to ask what they mean until now. But fear not! Here’s an understandable explanation for both.

A sea breeze or onshore breeze is any wind that blows from a large body of water toward or onto a landmass. By contrast, a land breeze or offshore breeze is any wind that blows from a landmass toward or onto a large body of water.

Onshore Wind (Sea Breeze)

Now, let’s explore the concept of onshore winds, also known as a sea breeze. The term sounds complicated, but it’s pretty simple.

Onshore wind is the wind that blows from the sea towards the land. This wind happens mainly during the day when the sun heats land faster than the sea. Imagine standing on the beach facing the sea; if the breeze hits you straight in the face, that’s an onshore wind.

Impact of the Onshore Wind on Fish Behaviour

When we have an onshore wind, it’s effectively pushing surface water away from the coast, which can significantly affect fishing. It often results in upwelling, where colder water from the depths replaces the surface water blown away by the wind.

You see, this cold, deep water is typically rich in nutrients. So, its movement towards the surface results in a surge of marine life, attracting baitfish and, consequently, larger predatory fish. It’s like ringing the dinner bell for fish!

Landbased Fishing in Onshore Wind Conditions

Now you understand the basics of onshore wind and how it affects fish behaviour, but how about casting your line in these conditions?

Generally, onshore wind is considered favourable for shore fishing. As the wind blows towards the shore, it can bring fish closer, making them easier to catch. However, casting into the wind can need a bit of practice. Your line might go farther than you’d like, and ensuring your bait lands in the right spot might be challenging.

Offshore Wind (Land Breeze)

Offshore wind, often called ‘land breeze’, involves wind sweeping from the land and heading out to sea. Remember, as with the onshore wind, the term doesn’t indicate the wind’s origin but where it is heading. So, with offshore wind, the breeze originates from the terrain you’re on and moving offshore. But what does this mean for your fishing expedition?

What Offshore Wind Means for Fish Behaviour

The movement of winds significantly impacts the patterns and behaviour of fish. During periods of offshore wind, the upper layers of water tend to be driven away from the shore. This event is replaced by a phenomenon dubbed ‘upwelling’ where the cooler and often nutrient-rich deeper waters rise to the surface. Now, this movement can cause a feeding frenzy among aquatic creatures.

Strategies for Fishing in Offshore Wind Conditions

Adapting your fishing strategy to suit offshore conditions can produce a significantly more rewarding catch. Here are a few strategic moves to consider:

  • Assess the Waves: Note the wave patterns with offshore winds, especially when boat fishing. Keep vigilant of swelling waves, as they can indicate a change in wind conditions.
  • Fish Deeper: As the colder, deeper waters rise, they bring larger fish from the depths. Consider changing your bait and tackle to suit deeper fishing needs.
  • Be Alert: Offshore winds can be tricky when returning to shore. Wind strength can increase rapidly, pushing a boat further out to sea. Ensure you have a reliable and updated weather forecast.

In essence, offshore wind conditions offer a unique and challenging environment for the seasoned angler. But with a cautious approach and adaptive strategies, these conditions can provide a rewarding fishing experience.

Wind Against Tide

First up, what exactly is Wind Against Tide? Simply put, it’s a situation that comes into play when the direction of the wind is opposite to the direction of the tide.

Understanding Wind Against Tide

The consequence of wind against the tide is that it can create choppy conditions on the water. This chop is due to the opposing forces between wind and tide, resulting in steeper and more frequent waves. That might not be the most fantastic news if you’re susceptible to sea sickness, but for the crafty angler, it also means more opportunities for hooking a big catch. You see, such conditions can disrupt the standard feeding patterns of fish, making them more susceptible to your lures and baits.

Strategies for Fishing in Wind Against Tide Conditions

It’s crucial to understand that conditions of ‘wind against the tide’ can make the sea surface rougher, creating choppy conditions. This chop can stir up the seafloor, making smaller organisms move and attracting fish-seeking food. Thus, these conditions can also provide opportunities for catching more fish.

Plan Your Trip:

  • Before heading out, always check the weather forecast. It would be best if you always did this anyhow. This check will give you a heads-up about the wind and tide conditions for the day and can help you decide on the best fishing spot.
  • Once on the water, please pay close attention to the sea conditions; they can change quickly. Adjust your fishing strategy according to the wind and tide direction.

Choose Your Tackle Wisely:

  • When confronted with wind against tide conditions, you need a heavier tackle. The additional weight can help keep your bait steady in rough waters.
  • Consider using bait that mimics the natural food stirred up from the seafloor.

Be Patient: Patience when fishing in these conditions is essential. Fish are more likely to be active during wind against the tide but might also be more challenging to catch due to the sea’s roughness.

Always remember to keep an open mind and be ready to adapt based on the prevailing elements. Wind against tide conditions can be challenging, but they also offer unique opportunities that can make your fishing trip more rewarding.

Windward Shore and the Leeward Shore

So, here we are, sailing in wind-related fishing terminology. We’ve covered onshore wind, offshore wind, and wind against tide. Now, let’s ride the wave towards two more intriguing phrases – the ‘windward shore’ and the ‘leeward shore’.

Defining Windward and Leeward Shores

‘Windward shore’ is the shoreline facing towards the wind, meaning the wind is blowing onto it. This term is the opposite of the ‘leeward shore’, which implies a sheltered position where the wind blows away from it. The terms’ windward’ and ‘leeward’ are also commonly used in sailing and are introduced to fishing due to their nautical roots.

Just to confuse you – “the lee shore” differs from “a leeward shore”

Yes, you’ve read correctly. A ‘lee shore’ is a markedly different term from ‘a leeward shore’.

Lee Shore: As per nautical terminology, a ‘lee shore’ is a shoreline that the wind is blowing towards, i.e., the wind is pushing your boat onto this shoreline. It’s the shore you would find quite challenging to move away from in rough weather conditions due to the wind pushing against you.

Here’s a quick reminder – imagine being on a boat, and the wind is pushing against your back, directing you towards the shore. That shore you’re heading for, under the force of the wind, is what sailors term the ‘lee shore’.

If you’re on a boat and being pushed away from the shore due to the wind, that shore in the background is your ‘leeward shore’. It’s the square where you prefer to drop your fishing lines, as the lack of wind results in calmer waters and potentially better fishing conditions.

In Short

In essence, ‘onshore’ refers to wind originating from the sea and travelling towards the land. Conversely, ‘offshore’ is the wind blowing from the land to the sea. ‘Wind against tide’ indicates a situation where the wind and the tide move in opposing directions. Lastly, ‘windward’ and ‘leeward shores’ represent the side of a body of water where the wind is coming from and where it’s going, respectively. Remember that ‘lee shore’ means a shore onto which the wind is blowing, making it different from ‘a leeward shore’.

We often hesitate to ask questions due to the fear of appearing clueless. But who has yet to become a beginner at some point? Consider this: every expert was once a beginner. The difference is they dared to ask and dared to learn. Curiosity is a fantastic driver, and asking questions propels us forward in our learning journeys.

Remember the excitement that bubbles up when you’re about to cast your fishing line into the water? That excitement can be amplified tenfold when you understand what’s going on. Please think of how much more satisfying it will be when you hook the biggest catch, knowing it’s because you used the wind to your advantage. You can’t unlock that level of satisfaction if you let the fear of asking hold you back. Your hobby isn’t just about keeping you busy; it’s about bringing joy and a sense of achievement into your life, and understanding the terms and tactics involved can heighten that emotion.

In conclusion, overcoming the fear of asking is crucial to genuinely enjoying and mastering your hobby. And who knows? Today’s question may become tomorrow’s winning strategy on the water. So put your fears aside and start asking. It will help you confidently embrace the wind and take your fishing skills to the next level!

The Performance and Expedition Ranges from Radix

0

A common question I get, after recommending people to check out the Radix products, is which range to go for.

In Radix’s words…

Performance – Gain a competitive edge through improved recovery.

Expedition – For explorers, adventurers and endurance athletes.

[fvplayer id=”31″]

Ok, what does that mean to me?

While very similar, there are a couple of key differences which can lead to a choice based on priorities and, like many things, required needs.

In a nutshell, though, the expedition series is heavier and requires less water.

Nutritionally, you get more calories with the expedition, generally through more fat in the form of Coconut Oil.

Want to most bang for your buck, weight to calorie wise, and, not sure on the amount of water that might be available (or wanting to carry less) – the Expedition would be the go. A little more relaxed? Go Performance.

While the ranges aren’t exactly the same, there are a couple of meal options that do cross over – let’s look at one of them.

Performance Moroccan Style Wild Venison

Ingredients: Celery, Leek, Cauliflower, Wild Venison Meatballs (11%) [Wild Venison (90%), Organic Rice Flour, Parsley, Ginger, Pink Himalayan Salt, Rosemary Extract, Sunflower Oil], Pumpkin, Red Capsicum, Beetroot, Organic White Rice, Plum, Organic Olive Oil, Beef Bone Broth, Pink Himalayan Salt, Cumin, Smoked Paprika, Turmeric, Coriander Leaf, Nutmeg, Allspice, Cardamom, Garlic, Parsley, Cinnamon

118g – requires 400ml boiling water – total ‘weight’ = 518g 0r 4.98kj per gram.

I know Mike (Radix’s owner) hates simplifying things down to a simple calorie statement, but, in this case, I think it’s going to help me illustrate my point, so bear with me Mike!

It should be noted that both the Performance and Expedition meals are larger and ‘more filling’ than the Well Being range – and I would pick for most of us lads, the bigger size will be appreciated. I know I tend to read some Freeze Dried Meal packets and assume a meal for 2 is going to be right for me.

The Performance also has an increase in protein and carbohydrate levels help support athletic training and higher physical workloads. The key is helping recovery here. Big day humping around the hills? Help your body repair overnight for the same thing, the next day.

😉

Expedition Moroccan Style Wild Venison

Ingredients: Wild Venison Meatballs (22%) [Wild Venison (90%), Organic Rice Flour, Parsley, Ginger, Pink Himalayan Salt, Rosemary Extract, Sunflower Oil], Organic White Rice, Leek, Cauliflower, Tomato, Courgette, Red Capsicum, Broccoli, Organic Coconut Milk (Contains Maltodextrin), Ground Almonds, Organic Coconut Oil, Plum, Pink Himalayan Salt, Beef Bone Broth, Ginger, Sweet Paprika, Cumin, Coriander Leaf, Lemongrass, Coriander Seed, Garlic, Turmeric, Smoked Paprika, Cinnamon

140g – requires 270ml water – total ‘weight’ = 410g 0r 8.19kj per gram.

A higher-fat-and-calorie selection of savoury meals. Ideal for explorers, adventurers and high-performance athletes wanting to achieve peak performance in extreme situations. Providing increased energy, high-quality protein and packed with nutrients.

So, again, denser, meaning you get more energy for less weight. It also requires less water, so in situations where you have to manage that a bit more tightly, the adventure range could be the go.

Is it Safe to Swallow Gum? Busting Myths and Understanding the Science for Kids

0

So you’ve just enjoyed a minty stick of gum, but you’re not anywhere you can easily dispose of it. The temptation arises – what if you just swallowed it? Your mind might quickly flash to the age-old warning, immortalised in schoolyards across the country: “Don’t swallow your gum—it’ll stay in your stomach for seven years!” But is there any truth in this? Is it okay to swallow gum? We’re here to help you find the truth behind these chewy myths.

Remember, sometimes the things we’re told as kids aren’t always based on scientific fact!

Before we begin, knowing how our stomach works is useful to understand what potentially happens when you swallow gum. Here’s a quick, kid-friendly breakdown:

  • Your stomach is a bit like a mixer. It uses acids and powerful muscles to break down what we eat and drink.
  • Then, the small intestine takes over, pulling out all the goodies (like vitamins and minerals) our body needs.
  • The leftovers are sent to the large intestine, and well… you know the rest.

Food takes 24 to 72 hours to pass through the digestive system.

The Myth: Gum Stays in Your Stomach for Years!

We’ve all heard this one before. Your aunt, teacher, or even mum or dad might have told you this: “If you swallow gum, it stays in your stomach for seven long years!” But is this true? Or is it just a myth? After all, sure, gum is a bit odd. It’s different from most food we eat because no matter how much we chew, it never seems to break down. But does this mean it’s settling in for a seven-year holiday inside your gut? Well, let’s see…

The Seven-Year Tale: Fact or Fiction?

If you believe the seven-year myth, swallowing gum by accident (or even on purpose!) can seem a little scary. But here’s the cheerful truth – It’s complete and utter tosh! Total codswallop!

The human body is a remarkable thing, especially when it comes to processing what we eat and drink. Yes, even gum! While it’s true that our body can’t digest gum the same way it does an apple or a biscuit, this doesn’t mean it gets stuck inside us for years.

So, What Happens to Swallowed Gum?

In simple terms, the same thing happens to other stuff we can’t digest. Our bodies have a handy trick for dealing with such things. Let’s think about corn for a moment. Have you ever noticed how corn appears pretty much the same when it comes out as it did going in? That’s because our bodies can’t fully break it down. But this doesn’t mean it sticks inside us; our digestive system moves it along and out of the body.

The same is true for chewing gum. Though our stomach cannot break it down completely, the rest of our digestive system can move it along. So, of course, swallowed gum doesn’t stay around for seven years. It usually exits within a couple of days, just like that kernel of corn!

Is It OK to Swallow Gum?

Even though gum doesn’t stick around in your belly for years, it’s still not a great idea to regularly swallow it. Occasional accidents are fine (and unavoidable!), but remember, the gum is designed for chewing, not chomping down and swallowing like a piece of chocolate. It’s not harmful if it happens occasionally, but it’s not something you should make a habit of. So next time you finish with your gum, best to pop it in a bin, not your tummy!

The stomach produces about 2 litres of gastric juice every day.

Meet Your Mighty Stomach: A Food-Breaking Powerhouse

The stomach is pretty ace when breaking down most things we chomp. It’s like a food magic trick! But what about gum?

The Stomach’s Acidic Superpower

Your stomach is filled with a remarkable juice called stomach acid. It’s so strong it could even dissolve a nail! But not even this superhero acid can break down the synthetic rubbery stuff gum is made of. It’s a bit like if Superman met a material completely immune to his powers. Frustrating, huh?

Gum’s Incredibly Hardy Nature

Chewing gum’s tough nature comes from a synthetic base. We often compare it to natural rubber, Like the stuff your bicycle tyres are made of. That’s why it’s so bendy and bouncy!

But swallow it, and your stomach will have a tough time. This rubber base doesn’t break down in the stomach’s acid. It’s not quite invincible, though. Your body still has a clever plan to deal with it.

Kicking Gum Out of the System

When you swallow gum, something marvellous happens. Your stomach can’t break it down, so it wraps it up with other hard-to-digest stuff. It then sends it through your digestive system, almost like a farewell party, but without cake. And it usually exits your body during a visit to the loo within a few days. There you have it. It’s not a seven-year stay! Instead, gum is a brief visitor to your body’s magical world.

Can Anything Stay in Your Stomach for Seven Years?

Well, not really. Not even an item made of plastic or metal. Your body simply isn’t designed to store something that it can’t digest for this long!

Your stomach says – “I don’t know what this is or what to do with it, so I’m just going to push it out!”

So, that’s the journey of a piece of swallowed gum for you. A guest, but not a long-term tenant in your body. It’s not as scary as the Tall Tales might have you believe.

Contrary to popular belief, gum does not stay in the stomach for seven years if swallowed.

Deciphering Fact from Fiction: An Exercise in Truthfulness

You may be curious how to differentiate between truth and myth regarding facts like these. Well, it’s simpler than you might think! Here are some steps you can follow to get to the bottom of cool beliefs and legendary tales:

  • Ask Questions: Be inquisitive, like you’re asking about swallowing gum. Always seek explanations and evidence about what you hear. Phrases like ‘Is that true?’ and ‘Where did you hear that?’ encourage others to check their facts too.
  • Do Some Research: After asking questions, you could dig deeper into the topic. Look out for reliable sources of information, like well-regarded science websites, encyclopedias, or even good old trusted books from the library.
  • Consider the Source: When conducting your investigation, always consider the source. Is it from an expert, a trusted organisation, or someone sharing an opinion without much evidence? Trustworthy sources can back their claims with facts, research, and logic.
  • Consult Adults for Clarification: If you’re ever stuck or unsure, speak to an adult you trust, like your parents, a teacher, or a librarian. They can help you distinguish myths from facts, and they might even learn something new from your questions! And remember. Adults are not always right!
  • Be Patient: It’s sometimes challenging to tell fact from fiction, especially with many fanciful stories floating around. But patience is key. The truth is out there; you’ve just got to keep looking!
  • Keep Asking Questions: Just because you have learnt something new, it never hurts to keep an open mind to the possibility that you might later find out new information that allows you to discover something new and requires you to change your mind again. That’s how we learn!

Remember, it’s fantastic to question and learn. You might even debunk a myth others have believed for years!

A Kids Guide to Cooking Perfect Spaghetti

0

We were on a mission, both eager and determined. A list of ingredients was duly prepared – spaghetti, sausages, onions, tomatoes and a dash of spices. This simple list and the thrill of exploration might turn her little culinary adventure into a lifelong hobby.

Here’s a little tip for all grown-ups: kids are naturally curious, but introducing them to cooking can also help them develop a love for healthy foods early on. It gives them a sense of ownership over their meals, and let’s not even get started on the pure joy of creating something with your own two hands!

The Basic Ingredients for a Perfect Spaghetti

When crafting the perfect spaghetti plate, the devil’s in the detail — and the ingredients, of course! First, we must ensure we’ve got everything we need (because there’s nothing worse than starting a dish and realising you’ve run out of a key ingredient).

  1. Pasta: Let’s start with the star of the show, spaghetti. Opt for high-quality, durum wheat pasta for the best results. Next time you’re at the supermarket, don’t hesitate to spend a little extra on a better brand; trust us, the results are worth it.
  2. Sauce: Depending on your (or your kid’s) preference, you can choose a classic tomato sauce, a creamy white sauce, or a pesto. Homemade sauces are always the way to go, though jarred ones can save the day in a pinch.
  3. Vegetables or meat: You can add veggies or meat to the sauce depending on your fancy. For a vegetarian option, you might want to consider bell peppers, mushrooms, and courgettes. If you’re after some meat, choose some good beef sausages; cutting them up is a simple way to provide protein.
  4. Seasoning: Garlic, onions, salt, peppers, and your choice of herbs are the foundation of a flavourful spaghetti dish. Go heavy – spices are good!
  5. Cheese: A sprinkle of Parmesan or Pecorino cheese on top finishes the dish with a delicious and irresistible zing.

Mastering the Art of Boiling Pasta to Perfection

Boiling pasta might seem like one of those straightforward tasks that doesn’t need much elaboration. Still, boy, have I seen some interesting interpretations of this simple step! Sometimes, it’s an undercooked crunch or an overcooked, mushy mess; believe me, neither is pleasant. Today, we’ll lift that mystery with a few foolproof steps, turning you into a pasta-boiling whizz!

  • Fill Your Pot with Ample Water: How can we start the party without water? So, grab your largest pot, fill it with water and plonk it on the hob. You need quite a bit of water because each strand of spaghetti needs room to swim around freely. If they’re packed in too tightly, they’ll stick together, ending up in a rather unappetising clump.
  • Salt the Water – Generously!: Did you know that when we say “salt the water,” we genuinely mean really salt the water? Think of it as the Mediterranean Sea in your kitchen! Don’t worry about oversalting your pasta; most salt will drain with the water. The small bit left will merely seep into your spaghetti, giving it a nice, subtle flavour boost.
  • Bring the Water to a Boil: Patience is a virtue, my friends! Crank that heat up until you have a rapid, rolling boil going. You can’t rush this step because adding your spaghetti into lukewarm water will give it a slimy texture. And we don’t want that, do we?
  • Adding the Spaghetti: It’s time to let your spaghetti enjoy its hot bath! The trick here is not to break the spaghetti but to hold it over the pot with one end submerged in the water. As the submerged end softens, gently push the remainder into the pot. Voila! You have whole pieces of spaghetti cooking uniformly and ready to absorb your sauce beautifully!
  • Keep Your Eye on the Clock: Last but not least, it is important to cook the spaghetti until it is ‘al dente’, which is Italian for ‘to the tooth.’ Too confusing? Just remember your spaghetti should still have a little bite to it, neither too hard nor too mushy. So, keep an eye on the time (usually around 8-10 minutes), taste a strand or two towards the end of the cooking time, and then drain immediately once it’s done!

And there you have it, perfectly cooked spaghetti! Trust me, your spaghetti dishes will reach a new level with these steps.

Should you rinse your Spaghetti once cooked?

I often hear one question from first-time spaghetti cooks: “Should I rinse the spaghetti after it’s cooked?” That’s a brilliant question, and I’m so glad you asked!

Rinsing, you see, is one of those little cooking debates where we all have a different stance. Yet in my experience (and quite several Italian chefs would agree!), it’s generally best not to rinse your pasta after cooking.

Why? Remember that the starchy water from cooking, clinging to the pasta surface, plays an important role in helping the sauce adhere to the spaghetti. So, when you rinse your pasta, you wash away all the lovely starch, making your spagbol a bit less saucy (and we wouldn’t want that, now would we?).

There’s one exception, though. Give it a good rinse if you’re making a cold pasta salad. This eliminates stickiness and keeps the temperature down.

Addition of Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A Yay or Nay?

Speaking of pasta questions, what about adding olive oil to the pot while the spaghetti is cooking or after it’s drained? Here’s the scoop: Adding olive oil isn’t unnecessary when cooking spaghetti

Although it’s a widespread belief that adding oil prevents the pasta from sticking together, this isn’t entirely accurate. What truly makes a difference is stirring your pasta frequently while cooking. This keeps your spaghetti slip-slidey and prevents clumping.

Plus, like rinsing, adding oil can prevent the sauce from clinging to your spaghetti, leading to less tasty results. We might drizzle a bit in when serving for that glossy look and extra flavour, but otherwise – no oil is necessary!

Sauce Secrets: Elevating Your Spaghetti Game

Now that we’ve mastered the art of cooking pasta and learned about the essential ingredients, it’s time to unravel the secrets of a great sauce. It’s a well-known truth (at least among us spaghetti aficionados) that the sauce can make or break your spaghetti masterpiece. So, grab your aprons and let’s get saucy!

  • Choosing a Base for Your Sauce: You might be wondering, what’s in a base? Quite a lot! The base of your sauce is what provides the primary flavour. There are four main bases you might pick from: tomato, cream, oil, and butter. Tomato is the classic choice, and for good reason—it’s rich, acidic, and perfectly complements the subtle sweetness of the pasta. But don’t be afraid to experiment with others, particularly if you’re feeling a bit posh and fancy a cream or truffle oil base.
  • The Importance of Fresh Ingredients: Remember when I got lost in that outdoor market in Italy last summer, only to stumble upon a stand selling the freshest tomatoes I’ve ever seen? They transformed my pasta sauce like you wouldn’t believe. Fresh ingredients are truly the secret sauce to your sauce! So, try your best to use fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, and herbs instead of their canned or dried counterparts.
  • Cooking Your Sauce: Slow and Steady Does It: We do not want to rush the sauce. And, let’s face it, savouring the smell of simmering sauce is half the pleasure of cooking spaghetti. It’s relaxing and therapeutic and makes the wait worthwhile. So, simmer your sauce on low heat, stirring occasionally to allow the ingredients to meld together beautifully. Even if you feel impatient and can’t wait to dive in (totally understandable), resist the urge to crank up the heat.
  • Tasting and Adjusting the Flavours: Do a taste test before serving. Does it need a little more salt? Perhaps a squeeze of lemon for brightness or a pinch of sugar to balance out the tomato’s acidity? Trust your tastebuds—they’ll guide you to the perfect seasoning.

My fellow sauce enthusiasts, our spaghetti sauce secrets are out in the open. With these tips up your sleeve (or should I say, splattered on your apron), you can elevate your spaghetti game to fabulous new heights. Get cooking, and remember to enjoy the journey—it’s as satisfying as the meal itself! Well, almost.

Adding Flavour with Herbs and Spices

Now that we’ve covered the importance of sauce and pasta, it’s time to add some ‘oomph’ with herbs and spices. Often overlooked as mere garnish, herbs and spices can make or break your spaghetti experience. After all, the little things often bring out the big flavours, right?

Imagine you’re an artist. Your spaghetti is your canvas, and the herbs and spices are your vibrant palette. It’s time to get creative!

The Staples: Meet our quintessential herbs

Basil and oregano are our usual go-to’s for traditional Italian spaghetti. Reminiscent of sun-ripened terraces in Sicily or Tuscany, these herbs invite the essence of Italy straight to your plate.

Basil (or basilico, as Italians would call it) is the undisputed queen of herbs when it comes to spaghetti. Its sweet, peppery flavour adds a wonderful freshness to any tomato-based sauce. Remember to add it towards the end of cooking to keep its flavour vibrant.

And what of oregano? It’s the unsung hero of our spaghetti tale. It brings a warm, earthy aroma and a slightly bitter, pungent taste that compliments tomatoes’ sweetness.

Spices: Adding a kick

Your spice rack is your treasure chest as you add a kick to your spaghetti. Garlic, red chilli flakes, and black pepper are all you need to start with. Don’t underestimate these humble spices! Cooked garlic has a sweet, nutty taste. As for chilli flakes and black pepper provide a spicy, zingy contrast to the rich, sweet tomato sauce – invigorating the taste buds on a whole other level!

But wait! One word of caution – balance is key. Like an overzealous artist, it’s easy to get carried away when painting with flavours. Take it steady and slow, adding a bit at a time and giving a good old taste test as you go along. Remember – you can always add, but you can’t take away!

The Extras: Herbs that deserve a mention

Want to break away from the traditional basil-oregano cabal? No shame in that! I’ve often ventured into the ‘herb unknown’ myself. Rosemary and thyme are brilliant in intimate quantities. And let’s not forget bay leaves, lending a subtle, earthy flavour to the sauce long simmering on the stove.

Bellissimo! We’ve ventured into the world of herbs and spices, adding a colourful, flavourful touch to our masterpiece of spaghetti. Next, we will delve into the art of plating and presentation. Just as an artist wouldn’t splatter paint willy-nilly, we must carefully plate our spaghetti. (More on that in the next section.) Until then, have fun experimenting with these seasonings.

Serving Spaghetti with Style: Plating and Presentation Tips

Spaghetti might be a simple food, but don’t underestimate the power of presentation! You have made an ordinary pasta but a masterpiece with all the love and care you’ve poured into it. Serving it in style will enhance its appeal and make it more enjoyable. Let’s explore some easy tips that even adults sometimes fumble with (and yes, it’s okay).

Bed of Sauce

Here’s a wonderful tip. Ever wondered why restaurant spaghetti has lovely pools of sauce at the base, while at home, the sauce often sits on top, all lonely? I used to wonder that until I discovered the secret – serve sauce first, pasta second. Reserve some sauce at the bottom of your plate before placing your spaghetti. It creates a delightful bed of sauce for your spaghetti and ensures you’ll have a nice and tasty end to your meal rather than a disappointing dry heap of pasta.

The Twirl Factor

You’ve seen it in food shows, the art of pasta twirling! It’s not just a fancy restaurant trick but also gives pasta a professional touch at home. Use a ladle or a long-pronged fork to create that Instagram-worthy pasta pile. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t turn out perfectly (even if I don’t always get it right). The important thing is we are having fun doing it. Plus, if you get some pasta to twirl around your fork later on, it’s a win-win!

The Garnish

Lastly, we can’t forget the icing on the cake – our garnish. A sprinkle of parmesan or pecorino cheese on top could do wonders, believe me (when was the last time adding cheese made anything worse?). A sprig of fresh basil or a pinch of chopped parsley can make your spaghetti visually stunning and add a vibrance of flavour.

And there you have a few simple tips for serving your spaghetti with style. Even though you’re a beginner on the culinary scene now, remember: every chef (even the famous ones) started somewhere (probably in a kitchen not unlike yours). So keep experimenting, have fun, and bon appétit!

The History and Origins of Spaghetti: Fun Facts to Share

Ready for some spaghetti trivia to impress your mates at dinner? Let’s delve into some steaming hot facts about our beloved spaghetti!

Spaghetti: A Tale of Long Strands and Long History

Ever found yourself twirling a long piece of spaghetti around your fork and wondered where it all began? Well, I have an interesting tale for you. Although we often link spaghetti with Italy, its roots (much like a well-cooked spaghetti strand) stretch far and wide.

Some believe that spaghetti was introduced by Marco Polo, the famous explorer, after his travels to China during the 13th century. The Chinese had been refining the art of pasta-making for years, so it seemed natural that Marco Polo would bring this skill back home. But here’s a twist – Italian references to pasta dishes predate Mr. Polo’s China trip, suggesting pasta was being enjoyed in Italy even before then! Talk about a culinary plot twist!

From Family Kitchens to Factories: Spaghetti Production

Did you know that until the 19th century, spaghetti was primarily a homemade delight? It would be rolled out, cut into long strands, and then hung out to dry – almost like laundry day at home! But with the Industrial Revolution, spaghetti production shifted from the home kitchen to the factory. Instead of drying in the warm Italian sun, those long strands were spinning on large machines, catapulting the spaghetti we love onto tables worldwide.

The Birth of Canned Spaghetti

Spaghetti entered a new era during World War II when canned spaghetti hit the market – think of Heinz! This was a major leap forward for the humble dish as it became known as a quick, simple meal for busy households. It turned the tide for pasta convenience and changed how spaghetti was consumed for generations.

So, there you have it, a quick whirl around the history of spaghetti – from ancient times to your family dinner table. Next time you twirl your fork around those long strands, remember – you aren’t just eating a delicious meal; you’re taking part in a culinary journey that spans centuries and continents. How’s that for a side serving of enlightenment with your spaghetti?

Life is a combination of magic and pasta.

The little girls first catch!

0

I recently got back into fishing – after a cool mini-adventure with my brother up in the Coromandel. When we got back we both commented that we should do it again. Myself, I got a little bit by the bug.

Since then, I have been (as is in my nature) soaking up as much as knowledge as possible, assembling a bit of kit, and headed off early in the morning to explore some land based fishing!

It’s also motivating me to get the big camera out again and take some more photos!

My big girl (6) actually indicated she would be interested in headed out with me one morning – so – a couple of weeks ago, we got up early and headed out to the wharf. As it turns out, that day, the only fish we got was the chocolate one on her fluffy – however – a little too my surprise – she said she wanted to head out again, and who was I to argue!

Getting a setup for her…

While I didn’t really need to, I figured she might enjoy having her own fishing rod. Most the rods I had inherited and bought were around the 6 foot mark – and while some are light, I thought a shorter, even lighter rig might make things a bit more fun for her.

After scouring the internet, I decided to take a big breath and just get a ‘kids’ setup – while I didn’t have an issue with getting something a bit ‘pricer’ – it also dawned on me that, 1 – she might suddenly go off it, and while I could use the gear for other jobs, she also 2 – might drop, smash and otherwise total the kit. Which is fine. Especially when it’s a set just for her and priced accordingly! 😉

So – I got in touch with one of the lads from Marine Deals – and popped in for a chat! Because it’s a small world, Alex from Marine Deals, as it turns out, had recently been up to Balnagown for a hunt with his kid and father!

I hadn’t realised just how big Marine Deals was. From its beginnings (by my understanding) as an online-only store based in a garage, it has, well… grown. I was given a brief glimpse into the inner workings – and well… the showroom (huge) is dwarfed by the warehouse out back (hugerer) focused on the online sales.

I had one stipulation from the little lady – she wanted something in red. I am glad not everything needs to be in pink. It’s been a conscious and intentional avoidance for a bit. Though, if she asked, I wouldn’t have had that much of a problem with it.

Anyhow – after a quick chat, we settled on a simple Shimano setup.

A simple combo of the Shimano Sienna Spincaster on a 4ft(ish) Kidstix. Simple, cheap, and man does that rod like like it can take some punishing!

While I was there, I also bumped into Mark from Ocean Angler – another wealth of knowledge! So – armed with a few new tips, some new kit the mission was on!

Finding The Wharf

The actual intent was to head out to Stillwater Wharf. Which. As it turns out – isn’t on any map and is a little confusing in regards to location. I found the fishing club there – but signs indicated that it was private use – so figured it couldn’t be the wharf people had told me about. If you know where this is – please go get in touch. I lived in Stillwater for a time, a bit of a hermitage in a bach – so would be keen to find it and fish it!

As it was, I located another spot and we headed over to Weiti Wharf – nice little place, lots of current (note – bigger weights next time) – but – most importantly – some fish for the girl to catch.

We started on the small baits – Sabiki Rig – which, as it turns out – was still oversized for the size of the bait fish that were actually present. I have lined up some tiny rigs for the future – and quickly learning that appropriate hook size is one of the biggest factors in getting in the fish you want.

I switched from the Sabiki to the simple dropper rig and started casting out into the middle of the river for her. Hits straight away. Pretty much we got to the point where every cast brought something in for her.

She out fished me. Enough that she actually started to suggest maybe she could give me some tips on catching something. 😉

Unfortunately, all the Snapper we caught were undersized. She understood the reason to through them back though – commenting – “Well, that’s ok, I am just happy I get to catch something!” – atta girl!

After the first couple of retrieves, I explained couldn’t take photos of everything – as we needed to get the little fish back into the water with the minimum of fuss. I also increased the hook size – which – pretty much stopped hook up immediately – still plenty of nibbles – but we stopped bringing in the little ones.

We spent the next hour or so casting, getting our bait eaten, but not catching many fish – so – towards the end, I switched back to a smaller hook – just so we could finish her day with bringing in a fish. Yes. Undersized, but it went straight back, and she left with a smile on her face!

I lost my new shirt even before I had a chance to wear it! Oh. And it’s not a shirt. It’s a cape!

Managing Undersized Fish Catch

Use Bigger Hooks

If you are catching a lot of small fish, consider a bigger hook. Or, if sea fishing, a bigger sinker to get that hook down below the smaller, likely higher in the water table fish.

Wet hands, minimal handling

Don’t stuff around. These things belong in the water. Also, if you can, wet hand, or even better, wet towel to minimise damage to the fish’s scales.

Change Tac.

Keep catching them? Do something different. Yes. It’s fun to catch stuff, but it’s also better to try something different if you keep hauling fish out of the water that you can’t keep.

Truck Tips

A big container of water in the back of the truck is great for washing hands, and shoes when you get them covered in burley.

Sabiki Tips

I went looking for info – and this video is just chock full of good tips. Even for general fishing – the bead tip for the kid’s rods is phenomenal!

Fishing Rigs for Kids

0

One thing I have learnt is that time is valuable when it comes to kids. The time you spend with them. The time you don’t.The amount of time you spend fluffing around sorting out fishing rigs while they are waiting and getting bored. To be fair, the kids actually just kept themselves busy playing on the…
