Ruger American .308 – A surprise performer!

A client recently dropped off his Ruger American in .308. I have a shot a few of these over the years - and they always strike me as agricultural in nature - I guess I am used to the smooth Tikka, or the even more sublime Sako - but the fit and feel of the Rugers are always a bit more basic, a little more clunky and a little less 'slick'. However. Holy hell did this one shoot!

This particular one was sporting a new optic in the form of a Leupold VX5 and had a DPT suppressor out on the front. Factory ammo, zeroed in five shots, shooting lights out!

I put one round through it to confirm on paper (out of the picture), made a quick adjustment, three-shot group (yes, that is a three-shot group), adjusted up and a click to the left, shot one, made a final adjustment of one click to the left and called it done!

The point of aim was the bottom right point of the triangle – and that ‘box’ size is 1 MOA. Three rounds touching where I can even tell where the third round was is pretty good in my books for factory ammo!

The client supplied a box of Federal Fusion 150 ammo with the gun. Which, is by no means considered a ‘premium’ ammo – it just goes to show, sometimes the gun and ammo (and scope) all come together to shoot lights out.

  • Ammo: Federal Fusion 150
  • Velocity: 2757fps
