Unravelling the Secrets of Tent Waterproofing

0

Here’s a handy list of tent waterproof ratings to help guide you:

  • Under 5,000mm: These tents are lightweight and suitable for fair-weather camping – think a peaceful night under the stars without a cloud in sight.
  • 5,000mm to 10,000mm: Such tents are perfect for mild rain and summertime weather.
  • 10,000mm to 15,000mm: A tent in this range will withstand most downpours and heavy snow – but don’t be fooled; they can eventually soak through if put under pressure. Like a stiff-upper-lip, they have their limits!
  • Above 15,000mm: If you’re looking for the Tardis of waterproof tents – reliable at any time or place – this could be the range for you! They can take on heavy rain or snowfall and are perfect for long winter camping trips (remember your thermals).

Beyond Waterproofing: The Importance of Breathability

Have you ever wondered why a waterproof tent, something made of PVC, would be a rather unpleasant place to get your beauty sleep? Well, breathing in a fully waterproof environment is no picnic.

The key to avoiding this scenario is called ‘breathability.’ This term refers to the ability of a fabric to allow moisture vapour to pass through and escape the tent. A perfect balance of waterproofing and breathability ensures a comfortable living environment during your camping adventure. It prevents condensation (your secret enemy in colder conditions) from building up and dampening the inside of the tent.

How do I know how breathable my tent is? Well, just like waterproof ratings, there’s a breathability rating too. Look out for a metric called MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate) when shopping for your next adventure tent. The higher the MVTR rating, the more breathable the fabric is.

The Unwanted Sauna: A Fully Waterproof Tent

Ever woken up in a tent that feels more like a tropical rainforest than a snug shelter? You’re not alone. That hellish sauna-like experience is what you’d get in a PVC tent.

A fully waterproof tent lacks breathability. Hence, the moisture your breath produces (and let’s not forget those wet hiking boots) builds up. It has nowhere to go and condenses on the interior, resulting in a build-up of dampness inside your tent. So, while a PVC tent might keep the rain out, inside, you’re left with a mini indoor monsoon!

So yes, waterproofing is essential (we’re all for dry socks and warm sleeping bags). But without decent breathability, your well-intentioned fortress can rapidly transform into a rainforest retreat.

Other factors to consider

Seam sealing is one of the most crucial factors in ensuring water doesn’t invite itself in for an unwanted sleepover in your tent. Waterproof ratings are all well and good, but an unsealed seam can be the wolf in a sheepskin, the silent whistle inviting droplets to take a sneak peek into your abode. You see, tent seams are like highways for water. When the tent’s fabric is sewn together, needle holes are created. These can act as entry points for water, completely ignoring your tent’s otherwise impressive waterproof rating. Many tents come with factory-taped or sealed seams, but even these can degrade and let water in over time. Regular checks and maintenance – resealing seams with silicone sealant for silicone-coated fabrics or polyurethane sealant for polyurethane-coated materials – can ensure your tent remains your dry haven.

The strength of the groundsheet can be just as pivotal, as a weaker one may allow water to seep upwards from the ground: an integrated or well-attached groundsheet, water-resistant zips, and a well-proportioned rainfly.

Making Informed Decisions for Dry and Comfortable Camping

Understanding the intricate relationship between waterproofing and breathability ratings is crucial for every camper. Navigating this maze enables one to avoid the discomfort of fully waterproof tents, akin to sleeping in unwanted saunas. Remember, your tent needs to expel moisture beyond just repelling water. As with all knowledge, using this understanding to make informed decisions is the key to ensuring dry and comfortable camping adventures, rain or snow blow.

Bruising in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Prevention, Treatment and Long-term Effects

Bruises are temporary, but the lessons learned on the mat last a lifetime.

Unknown

The Science Behind Bruising

Have you ever wondered why a bruise changes colour? That’s it’s healing process. It goes something like this:

  • Stage 1: Red. The bruise is fresh. The blood appears red because it’s still carrying oxygen.
  • Stage 2: Blue or Dark Purple. A few hours in, oxygen is no longer supplying the blood cells. Without the oxygen, the blood turns a dark blue or purple.
  • Stage 3: Green. A few days in, the body is at work breaking down and reabsorbing the blood. A chemical called biliverdin is produced at this stage, which is, you guessed it – green!
  • Stage 4: Yellow or Brown. Bilirubin is the final chemical produced during the bruise’s colourful journey. For the final stage, your bruise would be yellow or brown.

Our bodies are, indeed, outstandingly sophisticated machines.

The Relationship Between Bruising and Combat Sports

But why is bruising so common in combat sports like BJJ? Here’s the deal—combat sports, by their very nature, involve a lot of body contact, which increases the likelihood of bruising. When you’re rolling on the BJJ mat, it’s essentially a battlefield where blood vessels are on the front line. One wrong move, one tight grip, or one heavy tumble, and bam – you’re bruised.

Also, let’s not forget that every athlete’s body responds differently. Some of us might bruise easily, while others may walk away from a sparring session with barely a scratch. It’s not necessarily a sign of weakness or a deficiency – it’s how your body is wired.

If we have had a session that involves a lot of gripping – I know there will be minor, fingertip-sized bruises around my triceps. Yes, you want to avoid pinching skin, but I also consider it quite normal to have some marks left if someone is trying to hold onto your arms while manipulating your weight around you.

Diet and Its Impact on Bruising

Have you ever wondered if your food impacts how easily you bruise or how quickly those unsightly blue and purple patches heal? Well, let me tell you—it does. Providing our bodies with the necessary nutrients can dramatically speed up recovery from bruising, while certain other foods can make us more susceptible to them.

The Nutrients Your Body Needs

First, let’s highlight the good guys—those essential dietary components that can do wonders for bruise recovery. These include Vitamins C, K, and B-12, all of which play roles in the health of our blood vessels and clotting. Here’s the lowdown:

Vitamin C is like a personal bodyguard for your blood vessels, helping strengthen the walls and the cells inside. Citrus fruits, strawberries, and spinach are great C-sources, but capsicins? They’re bursting with the stuff!

Ever heard of Vitamin K? No? Well, let’s get acquainted. Vitamin K aids in clotting—basically, it’s your body’s on-hand medic, rushing to the site of a bruise to begin patching things up. Kale and spinach are Vitamin K powerhouses, but if you fancy something sweeter, prunes are a go-to!

Now, Vitamin B12—this chap is all about the formation of red blood cells. It is found in foods like shellfish, dairy, and my all-time love, beef! B12 not only helps produce more of these little warriors but also keeps them healthy to speed up recovery times.

These days, I get a lot of leafy greens, fresh fruits and red meat into the system – Vitamin K might be something I try out with implementation – but – at the same time, I know the bruises are only around for a day or two before disappearing – so I am comfortable the body is dealing with them quickly enough.

Shaking Hands with the Bad Guys: What to Avoid

As with every story, there are some villains in the mix. In combat sports, these come in the form of substances that can worsen or prolong healing time.

The first suspect? Alcohol. Yup, your post-match pint could be slowing down that bruise recovery. Alcohol dilates the blood vessels, increasing bruising and potentially making the discolouration more apparent! So, you might consider swapping that pint for a glass of water or a fruit smoothie after your match.

Next on our list is salicylic acid. Ever noticed how you bruise more easily when you’re taking aspirin for that nagging headache? That’s because aspirin has salicylic acid, which interferes with clotting processes. Don’t panic—I’m not telling you to abandon your headache reliever completely. Just be aware that regular use can make you more prone to bruising.

The Effects of Age on Bruising

If you’ve been part of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world for a while, you’ve probably noticed that as you age – your bruises start keeping up with the times as well. They seem to appear more frequently and stick around for longer. Don’t worry; you’re not imagining things. It’s not your mind playing tricks on you because you just hit the big 4-0 – there is a scientific basis to this phenomenon.

Why the Elderly Bruise More

So why do we old boys seem to bruise more than you whippersnappers? As people age, their skin becomes thinner, losing some protective fatty layers that cushion the blood vessels against injury. It’s as simple as that. As you age, your body’s cushy protective layer says its goodbyes, leaving you more prone to bruises. Besides, the blood vessels themselves become more fragile and are, hence, more likely to rupture.

Slow Healing with Age

But it’s not just the frequency of bruises you need to worry about—why do our bruises seem to linger longer as we age? That is due to the body’s repair mechanisms slowing down with age. Think of it as a once enthusiastic worker who’s now nearing retirement. It does the work – yes, eventually – but with less pep. This slower healing process means that your bruises take their sweet time to disappear, leaving you with longer memories of your fantastic falls and throws in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu arena. Just look at a kid to see how much age affects healing rates.

Staying Healthy and Active

It makes you think it’s all downhill from here, right? But here’s the kicker – it doesn’t have to be. Age might be a significant player in the bruising game, but it’s not the sole actor. Nutrition, overall health, and fitness levels also play their roles. Eating the right food (discussed in previous sections), staying active, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help you fight these age-induced changes. So, ironically, the very fact you are getting more bruises from training, can help with the healing process of bruises!

Treating Bruises

There are numerous steps you can take to treat your bruises when you initially get them, and you can even accelerate their healing with some tried and tested home remedies. These simple steps and remedies can help manage the discomfort, reduce the visibility of the bruise, and speed up the healing process. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the details.

First Aid for Bruises

Alright, you’ve just rolled off the mats and discovered a not-so-lovely new bruise blooming. What’s the next step? Well, follow the classic R.I.C.E treatment: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

  1. Rest: Give yourself a break! Your body needs time to start the healing process, so avoid any activities that could cause further injury.
  2. Ice: Wrap an ice pack in a cloth or towel and place it on the bruised area for about 15-20 minutes. This helps to reduce swelling and numbs the sore area.
  3. Compression: Wrap the area with a bandage. It’ll help to curb the swelling, but remember not to wrap it too tight — we don’t want to cut off blood circulation.
  4. Elevation: Try to elevate the bruised area above heart level. You’re essentially helping your body to minimise swelling by encouraging blood flow away from the affected area.

Home Remedies to Speed up Healing

Now sparkling and back at your abode, what can you do to hasten the bruise healing process further? Just check our handy-dandy home remedies:

  1. Vitamin C & K: These vitamins are champions in healing skin. Vitamin C aids the production of collagen, which helps with skin repair, whilst Vitamin K improves the body’s ability to clot blood, thereby reducing continued bruising.
  2. Pineapple & Papaya: These fruits contain enzymes (bromelain and papain, respectively) that help to break down blood clots and, thus, facilitate the healing of bruises.
  3. Arnica: This is a homeopathic topical cream, often used to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and speed up the healing process.

Remember, these home remedies are not one-size-fits-all solutions. So, pay attention to your body. If you notice any unusual symptoms or the bruise does not start fading after a couple of days, consider seeking medical attention.

Arnica or Voltaren?

That’s the million-dollar question. Arnica or Voltaren? Both are popular choices for treating bruises, but which stands out?

Arnica, a plant native to high-altitude regions in Europe and North America, has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. And let’s be honest, folks — anything that’s stood the test of time deserves our attention. It’s used in creams and gels that you apply directly to your skin to help reduce swelling and speed up the healing of bruises.

Voltaren, on the other hand, is a brand name for a popular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), diclofenac. It’s employed worldwide — from the field to the mat, from sprains to strains.

So, who’s the champion in this showdown?

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, there’s no clear-cut winner here. What works best will depend on each individual, their body’s response, and the severity and type of the bruise.

Regardless of your champion cream or gel, consistency. It matters less what you choose to use and more that you consistently apply it. After all, your bruise isn’t going away after one application, so why should your treatment?

Ultimately, an established routine of care and attention will make a difference. Consistency in action — even in bruise treatment — can yield significant results.

When to Seek Medical Attention

When engaging in combat sports like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it’s vital to understand when a bruise is just a bruise—and when it’s a cry for medical attention. Sure, we all love a good war story to share, but ignoring severe symptoms could lead to serious health issues. – Remember, we’re warriors, not doctors!

So, when should you seek medical attention? Let’s lay it out:

  • Size: If the bruise is large or rapidly increases, it’s a good idea to check it.
  • Location: Have you taken a hit to the head, neck, or eyes? Even a ‘minor’ injury to these areas can be severe. Don’t fob it off.
  • Pain: All bruises can hurt, sure! But if the pain doesn’t subside or worsen, that’s not a great sign.
  • Swelling: A slight swelling can be normal. But uncontrolled swelling? It’s time to see a doctor.
  • Other symptoms: Feeling dizzy, faint, or nauseous? Are you experiencing vision trouble or difficulty moving a joint? Yep, you’re probably not surprised – see a healthcare professional.

How to Spot Potentially Dangerous Impacts

Let’s face it – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an intense sport. You’re going to take some hits. And while the occasional bruise or minor injury is par for the course, other impacts need attention. – So, how do you tell the difference?

Pay special attention to:

  1. Blows to the head: This can cause everything from minor concussions to severe brain injuries, so it’s never something to shrug off.
  2. Hard stomach impacts: These can cause internal damage, especially to your spleen or liver.
  3. Direct hits to joints: It can cause potential dislocation or injury to ligaments and tendons.

Remember, the goal here isn’t to alarm you – it’s to arm you with knowledge. Combat sports are physical and intense, and understanding the risks can keep you safe and healthy. – Because isn’t that what a true warrior wants?

Long-Term Effects

Admittedly, being a regular in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes can often translate into sporting a colourful array of bruises. All that grappling and rolling can lead to interesting discolourations – trust me, I’ve been there. But what does this mean for you in the long term?

The Elephant in the Room: Chronic Bruising Isn’t So Charming

Repeated bruising, especially in an intense sport like BJJ, might raise eyebrows. The main concern with bruising isn’t so much the eye-catching colours or even the occasional wince when someone gives you an enthusiastic pat on the back. Instead, it’s what this repeat injury might be doing to your body beneath the surface. Over time, the small blood vessels, or capillaries, beneath your skin can weaken due to regular damage. This could potentially lead to prolonged healing times and – if not given enough time to heal – an increased risk of more severe injuries.

Impact on Blood Flow and Nutrient Supply

Consider this – regular bruising or capillary damage can disrupt blood flow to that area. Remember, your blood is vital in supplying nutrients and oxygen to your body’s cells and removing waste products. So, when blood vessels are damaged, this essential service can be hindered, impacting your healing and recovery process.

Is it all Doom and Gloom?

Not at all! While it’s crucial to take precautions and care for your body, the risks don’t make our beloved BJJ any less appealing. The key is to give your body the necessary time to heal, remain mindful of your body’s signals, and, by all means, please don’t ignore persistent bruises or swelling. And remember, regular check-ups with a medical professional or a sports therapist won’t hurt either – well, not as much as a BJJ chokehold anyway!

Empowering Yourself with Knowledge and Care

Knowledge is power, as they say. Put simply, now that you know the ins and outs of bruises, you’re in a better position to prevent—and react to—them.

To recap:

  • Bruises are a common consequence of contact sports like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu— they’re essentially injuries to your blood vessels.
  • Diet and age can play a substantial role in how quickly you bruise and heal. Keeping a healthy lifestyle with a balanced intake of essential vitamins and nutrients is crucial.
  • Your body’s reaction to bruising changes as you age. Those who are ‘more experienced’ might find that we bruise more easily and heal slower. Fortunately, staying active and healthy can help manage this process.
  • Treating bruises can be effectively done at home with first aid and some handy remedies. Yet, knowing when things might be a bit more severe and seeking medical help becomes necessary.
  • Finally, continuous bruising can lead to long-term effects — from nutrient supply disruption to tissue scarring. Yet, don’t let this scare you off the mat! As long as you take care of your body, your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey shouldn’t be hindered by these minor setbacks.

But now comes the most significant bit—how you use this information. Implementing the right dietary changes, preventing bruises, and knowing how to react when they happen are all vital for your health and your sport.

So, remember: cool down, elevate, compress, repeat!

Lastly, I can’t stress this enough: listen to your body. It’s often more adept at informing you about an issue than any doctor! Listen to its whispers so you don’t have to hear its screams. Let’s strike that perfect balance on the mat—between power and caution, knowledge and application. After all, isn’t that what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all about?

The Winkl Linen Sheet Set

0

Last winter, I formed an unexpected bond. Both with a person and with the Winkl Linen Sheet Set. Sounds strange, right? Falling for bed linen? I thought so, too until I experienced these sheets myself. If you’re not gushing about your sheets as I am, perhaps it’s time for a change. These Winkl gems swept me off my feet one chilly winter night.

If you’re considering upgrading your bed sheets or simply yearning for luxury in your bedroom, you’re in the right place. I’m here to share my review of a linen set that’s been my faithful companion over the recent cold months. Who would’ve thought a single superior sheet set could usher in such comfortable sleep?

Unveiling the Quality: A Close Look at The Winkl Linen Sheet Set

Imagine this, mates – lounging in bed with the Winkl linen sheets caressing your skin. These aren’t just any sheets – they’re made with top-tier, pure Linen with a cosy 180 thread count. Due to Linen’s naturally thick fibres, the thread count is a bit lower than some may expect. However, don’t be mistaken — these sheets are remarkably durable and long-lasting.

Now, let’s talk materials. The Flax used in these sheets is sourced from Belgium and France—arguably the elite producers of quality flax. This Flax is what makes Winkl sheets breathable and refreshingly cool. You’re probably thinking – why source from Belgium and France? These regions provide ideal conditions for flax growth, resulting in top-class Linen.

Winkl linen sheets are produced via an eco-friendly process. After being made, the sheets are treated with a stone-washing process. Why, you might ask? This technique increases the softness of these plush sheets and shrinks them a tad, ensuring they fit your bed perfectly from the get-go. It’s attention to such details that genuinely sets Winkl linen sheets apart.

Sorry, did you say Flax?

That’s right, we’re talking about Flax here. Not just any flax, mind you, but the kind that’s been magically transformed into Linen. Flax linen is a natural textile known for its lightness and breathability – characteristics you can’t ignore when snuggling up in bed. The flax fibres, derived from the stalks of the Linum usitatissimum plant, a rather long-winded name for the common flax plant, are traditionally crafted into linen material. The result is a durable, absorbent fabric that’s oh-so-gently against the skin.

Luxurious Comfort: The Feel of The Winkl Linen Sheet Set

Initially, it’s fair to say the sheets felt a little scratchy. However, after a couple of washes, that feeling completely disappeared and was replaced with a soft texture I had never felt on a sheet. I could only compare it to a 20-year-old mohair blanket I still have. Soft, warm, comforting, but not clammy or scratchy.

No More Sweating: How The Winkl Linen Sheet Set Regulates Temperature

When I purchased the Winkl linen sheet set, my concern leaned heavily on the temperature regulation aspect. Considering winter was approaching, I did not want to buy sheets that would freeze me at night. Quite comically, I was also concerned about turning my bed into a weeping snowman in case the sheets became too hot. I tend to sleep hot generally.

But, ladies and gents – I have never slept better. The sheets trap the right amount of heat to keep me comfortable without turning me into an overheated bun.

Magic? Nope, pure science. The Winkl Linen Sheet Set can adjust to your body temperature. In the winter, it insulates, keeping you warm and comfy. The solid yet breathable linen fibres prevent sweating by allowing adequate air circulation. Now, isn’t that marvellous?

Beyond Winter: Using The Winkl Linen Sheet Set All Year Round

If I asked you to think of Linen, your mind might immediately flicker to images of scorching summer days, not the winter. It’s true – Linen is well-considered a heavyweight champion for summertime because of its breathability. But don’t pigeonhole it to just one season — my experience with the Winkl Linen Sheet Set this winter has made me realise its potential for year-round use.

You see, these beauties from Winkl aren’t just your run-of-the-mill sheets. They’re a delightful paradox, being both warm and cool at the very same time. That’s right, I said warm and cool. Allow me to explain.

Warm and Toasty during the Chillier Months

Traditional wisdom would have us reach for flannel or fleece sheets in winter — they’re cosy, right? But then you wake up at 2 a.m. thoroughly overheated. This is where Winkl’s linen sheets genuinely shine. Linen, derived from the wholesome flax plant, has excellent heat preservation capabilities. I found the sheets to keep me comfortably warm in the winter without causing me to wake up in a sweaty inferno.

A Cool Breeze During the Summer

As they say, the proof of the pudding is in the summer heat. Or something like that. This is where Linen’s famed breathability comes into play. The Winkl Linen sheet set, with its slightly rougher texture compared to its smoother cotton cousin, allows for excellent airflow. The result is a divine, relaxed, non-clammy feel during those long summer nights. While I haven’t hit the peak of summer yet, I have high expectations based on the performance in the other seasons thus far.

The Magic Transition – Spring and Autumn

Spring and autumn, transition seasons, can be notably tricky for bedding. The Winkl linen sheets have proven to be adaptable chameleons, adjusting to these in-between temperatures. Coming out of winter, I found the Linen pleasantly warmer as the nights started to heat up. Similarly, moving from the searing heat of summer into autumn, the sheets remained comfortable and relaxed. The Linen’s adaptability impressed me here.

So there you have it – an all-season solution from our friends at Winkl. Don’t let Linen’s reputation as a summer stalwart put you off – these Winkl linen sheets, indeed, are year-round gems.

Conclusion: Wrapping Up My Experience with The Winkl Linen Sheet Set

I know this all sounds very gushy. But, these sheets, in combination with the Winkl Mattress they live on, really have upped the experience and quality of sleep I get. Being an older gentleman now, I treat my recovery (i.e. sleep time) very seriously – if I don’t get good sleep, I feel it, physically and mentally – so I have gotten rather precious about bedtime.

Now, I wouldn’t typically bandy about phrases like “game-changer” or “revolutionary,” but honestly – with the Winkl Linen Sheet Set, there isn’t a more fitting description. These sheets are like the Rolls-Royce of bedding—they glide smoothly, exude sophistication, and are all about comfort. They are that good.

A few Highlights of My Experience

  1. Warm in winters, cool in summers: These magical sheets appear to have a mind, knowing exactly when to warm you up and when to bring on the cool factor. All year-round comfort? Yes, please! Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too? I do have a set of high-quality cotton sheets as well. So it will be interesting to see who wins out at the end of summer.
  2. Luxury at its finest: I feel like royalty whenever I wrap myself in these Winkl Linen Sheets. And let me tell you, this experience is not something you get with regular cotton sheets. It’s very different. Cotton can be cool and crisp, but Linen is just welcoming.
  3. Durability that impresses: The sheets have maintained their integrity and softness even after several washes. There aren’t any signs of wear and tear.

So, would I recommend the Winkl Linen Sheet Set? Now, that’s a rhetorical question if there ever was one! But seriously, if you want to amp up the luxury factor in your life, look no further. Slide in, snuggle up and let Winkl do the rest.

Your sleep is essential, and so is choosing the right bedding. Invest in a product that looks good and stands the test of time (and seasons). And remember, you’re not just buying sheets – you’re investing in a piece of well-being.

What is Guy Fawkes?

0

Dad. What is Guy Fawkes?

Well, more correctly – who was Guy Fawkes? Mainly famous for his failed attempt to blow up parliament in London, Guy Fawkes was a former soldier turned activist born in Yorkshire, England, in the 1570s. He’s remembered each year on November 5, the night his plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament and the ruling King James I was foiled back in 1605.

Why do this? You may ask. Fawkes and his group of co-conspirators were Catholics, and they were frustrated with King James I’s Protestant rule, which was not in favour of Catholics—their basic plan was to replace the Protestant King with a Catholic ruler.

How was the plot foiled?

Because of an anonymous tip-off, authorities found Fawkes in a cellar under the Parliament building with 36 barrels of gunpowder. He was arrested and later executed.

Today, Fawkes’s failed plot serves as an annual reminder (in theory) about the importance of unity and peace in the face of divisive religious and political beliefs. However, if we are honest with ourselves, it’s long been replaced by a focus on the fireworks themselves, with most people being unaware (or uncaring) about the origin.

But speaking of fireworks, do you ever wonder how they work? Let’s take a look.

How do fireworks work? How do they get the different colours?

Well, I’m glad you asked! So, the first thing we need to know is that fireworks are not just about bright lights and deafening sounds. There’s a lot of science behind them. Essentially, when you light a firework, you’re setting off a chain reaction of chemical events. Now, let’s dive a bit deeper, and don’t worry! We’ll keep this fun and simple so you can sound like a mini scientist!

The Chemical Reaction Behind The Magic

You see, fireworks are made of different components; the primary ones are a fuel, an oxidiser, and a chemical mix that produces bright colours when burnt. Now, for a firework to explode and light up the sky, it must first be packed in a tight container. When you light it up, the fuel reacts with the oxidiser, releasing gases rapidly. This rapid release of gases is why fireworks explode and create that ‘boom’ sound you love so much.

Birth of the Dazzling Colours

But what about the intriguing colours? Well, those mesmerising reds, yellows, greens, and blues? Yes, they all come from different chemical compounds. When these chemicals get heated, they produce specific colours. It’s like each chemical is dressed up in its favourite colour outfit!

  • Strontium and lithium compounds create a deep red.
  • Calcium salts help produce a luscious orange.
  • Sodium compounds give off a bright yellow (just like table salt).
  • Barium compounds light up in a beautiful green.
  • Copper compounds create that captivating blue you adore so much.

Each chemical compound starts a tiny, colourful fire in the sky. The most exciting thing is mixing these chemical compounds to create a broader range of colours. But by combining compounds, you can make the vast array of colours, shapes and explosions you see in the sky.

Firework Safety: Tips for a Spectacular and Safe Celebration

For all the sparkle and splendour they bring, fireworks can pose certain risks if not handled correctly. So, how do we go about ensuring our celebrations remain both fun-filled and safe?

The ABC of Firework Safety

Secondly, there are general safety measures we can all follow to create a safe atmosphere. Let’s call these the ABC’s of Firework Safety:

  • Adult supervision: Never let children handle fireworks unsupervised. Even sparklers, which might seem harmless, can reach temperatures high enough to cause severe burns.
  • Be sober: Avoid consuming alcohol or drugs when dealing with fireworks, as they can impair your judgment and reaction time.
  • Clear area: Fireworks should always be lit in a wide-open space, away from buildings, vehicles, and flammable substances.

What to Do In Case of an Accident

Despite all precautions, accidents can still occur. Knowing what to do in such a situation can help limit harm and speed up recovery. If someone gets hurt during your fireworks display, envelop the burnt area with cool, but not cold, water. It would be best to convey the individual to the nearest medical facility quickly. It’s always helpful to have an emergency kit and include a way of summoning ambulance services. Keep a hose, or at a minimum, a bucket of water handy!

Remember, it isn’t an infringement on your fun to be attentive to safety. Consider it as laying the groundwork for a truly joyous occasion that’s completely worry-free!

Look after your pets!

Now, we’ve just talked about us humans enjoying the Guy Fawkes fun, but what about the other significant part of our household? Yes, I’m talking about our furry friends. They, too, are affected, but unlike us, they’re less keen on all the noise and bright flashes.

Spare a Thought for Your Pets

You see, our pets have far more sensitive hearing than we do – you can think of it a bit like a superpower. Now, imagine how a tenfold increase in noise might feel to you. Not quite as enjoyable, right? That’s what fireworks can sound like to them. So, we must take extra care to ensure our pets feel safe and secure during the Guy Fawkes festivities.

So, how can we help them?

  • Keep Them Inside: Even if your dog usually lives outside, make an exception for this night. Trust me, they’ll thank you for it!
  • Create a Safe Space: Try to provide an enclosed, dark space where your pet can hide if they feel scared. Maybe it’s their favourite spot under the bed or a cosy nook in the cupboard.
  • Distraction: A bit of distraction doesn’t go amiss. Perhaps their favourite toy or a special treat will keep their mind off those scary sounds.
  • Stay Calm: Pets often take cues from their human pals. So, do your best to stay calm and routine to help your furry friend feel secure.

Remember, Guy Fawkes Night should be a night of fun for everyone, and that includes the four-legged members of our family, too.

Different Traditions and Celebrations that Utilise Fireworks

Thinking about Guy Fawkes Night, I’m sure you’ve noticed that fireworks aren’t an exclusively British tradition or something we do only on the 5th of November. So why do we find fireworks lighting up the night sky at different events worldwide? Let’s go on a journey and explore a few global traditions that incorporate these beautiful and dynamic spectacles.

New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Now, remember staying up on New Year’s Eve waiting for the clock to hit midnight? What’s the first thing we see and hear when we welcome the New Year? That’s right, fireworks! From Sydney’s Harbour Bridge to London’s Thames River and our very own Auckland Sky Tower, fireworks have become synonymous with the ringing in of a new year. And remember – different cultures celebrate New Year’s at other times – Chinese New Year is around February, and Matariki is June (based on the Gregorian calendar we use).

The Japanese Hanabi Taikai

You know how much your old man loves sushi, right? Well, Japan, the land of sushi, has a summer tradition called the ‘Hanabi Taikai’, a series of firework festivals between July and August. Let me paint a picture for you: imagine picnics under the starlit sky, Yukatas (Japanese summer kimonos), traditional food stalls, and yes, my personal favourite, sushi- all while thousands of fireworks burst and dance their way across the night sky. How amazing would that be?

Diwali Festival in India

Lastly, let’s take a virtual trip to India. Diwali, or the Festival of Lights as it’s also known, is a significant occasion marked by millions of lit lamps, sweets, and, you guessed it, fireworks! These are not just for show but have a deeper symbolic meaning. They’re meant to represent the victory of light over darkness and the triumph of good over evil. Plus, imagine all the incredible flavours of India, the curries, the bread, and the sweets- it’s a feast for all senses!

So, my curious little adventurers, from the history of Guy Fawkes Night to our fascination with fireworks, isn’t it amazing how one plot to blow up a government building has given us an excuse to learn some chemistry, travel the world, and of course, how to be careful and considerate while having a ball of a time? It’s funny how things work out, right?

First thoughts on the Led Lenser P3 Core Torch

Why a Small Torch is a Must-Have Everyday Carry

In this era of technology, where our smartphones boast a tool for seemingly every occasion – a Swiss army knife of the digital age, it might seem a bit archaic to suggest carrying a stand-alone torch. Besides your phone, you’ve also got your wallet, keys, and infinite recycled shopping bags to contend with. So, why should you add a small torch to your everyday carry (EDC)? Allow me to enlighten you, pun entirely intended.

Firstly, while our phones are unquestionably handy, their batteries are not infinite. Consider a power outage, an unplanned night walk or any situation where prolonged use of light is needed. Do you want to sap your phone’s battery to illuminate your way?

Moreover, a properly designed torch, like the P3 Core Torch, offers a significantly brighter and more focused beam than most phones, so you can light up that dark alleyway or peer into a deep, dark crevice without straining your eyes or risking a nasty surprise.

Then there’s the issue of durability. Your phone wasn’t built for rough-and-tumble conditions. Drop it in a muddy puddle, knock it against a hard surface, or give it to an enthusiastic toddler for an impromptu game of ‘throw and fetch’, and your light source might end up out of commission. Conversely, the P3 Core torch is shock and water-resistant, poised to weather the storm quite literally – rain, shine.

So, to sum it up, a small torch, like the P3 Core Torch, provides an independent, bright, durable, and possibly life-saving light source. If that’s not a valid reason to include it in your EDC, I’m not sure what is. Just don’t shine it in your eyes.

Unboxing the P3 Core Torch: First Impressions

The P3 Core Torch makes a fantastic first impression inside the sleek packaging, hinting at its robust and compact form factor. Right off the bat, you’re presented with a small, lightweight torch that boasts exceptional brightness – 90lumens output – significantly impressive for a tool of its size. Running on a single AAA battery, it runs for 6 hours on low power and is compact and light (42g).

With a simple click interface (button on the back of the unit) – you click through the three power levels and off again – I much prefer this to any twisty type setup. To change from the broad to spot beam – you pull the front lens out forward – an operation most LED Lenser owners will already be familiar with.

It fits perfectly in the pocket and doesn’t catch the hand if getting the keys etc out.

Overall – very impressed!

Illuminate Your Path with the P3 Core Torch

The P3 Core Torch impressed me with its stellar performance and durable construction. Remarkably lightweight yet solidly built, this torch disproves the old saying, ‘Small but mighty doesn’t apply to torches’—because it unquestionably does here. While carrying a separate torch might have sounded absurd in the smartphone era, the P3 Core Torch reminded me of a dedicated device’s irreplaceable utility.

The Art of Resilience: Embracing Jiu Jitsu Principles for Personal Growth

In Jiu Jitsu, there is no losing. You either win or you learn.

Carlos Gracie Sr.

The Art of Control and Patience

In Jiu-Jitsu, one of the fundamental skills is learning to control and submit an opponent using leverage and technique rather than sheer strength. Similarly, in life, we are often faced with circumstances that are beyond our control. By embracing the ideals of Jiu-Jitsu, we can learn to navigate these situations with patience, composure, and adaptability.

I am starting to appreciate that there is plenty in this world that I can not directly control. While that often frustrates me, I need to focus on what I can influence – and channel my energy into that rather than worry about things I cannot. Otherwise, I waste my limited energy on something that no amount of fretting and worrying about will change. What skills can I learn or apply to my life, and how can I adapt and refine those I already have? Where is my leverage point?

The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle.

Richard Marcinko

The Power of Mindfulness

Jiu-Jitsu teaches us the importance of being present in the moment. By focusing on our breath, body movements, and the subtle nuances of our opponents, we train ourselves to be more mindful. This mindfulness can be carried over into our daily lives, helping us to be more aware of our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Being fully present allows us to make better decisions and respond effectively to our challenges.

Now is the only place in time when I have a direct influence. I can’t change the past; the future is only a concept. Right here, the singularity is where I can shape and form my life. I can only engage with those around me right now, as this is the space we all co-inhabit in our lives.

Believe you can and you’re halfway there.

Theodore Roosevelt

Embracing Failure as a Catalyst for Growth

In Jiu Jitsu, as in life, failure is an inevitable part of the journey. Every practitioner has experienced setbacks, tapped out, and made mistakes. However, the beauty of Jiu-Jitsu lies in its capacity to turn failure into a catalyst for growth. By embracing our failures, we become resilient, learn from our mistakes, and evolve on and off the mats.

Every day, I try to suck a little less. The idea of slow but constant improvement has taken over from a drive to ‘be the best’. Sometimes, day to day, I don’t see movement, but I need faith in the process, and now and then, I check in and realise I have shifted and improved quite a lot. Every failure is simply one less I need to make on the path to success.

The belt only covers two inches of your butt; the rest you need to back up on your own.

Royce Gracie

The Importance of Collaboration and Community

Jiu Jitsu is not an individual sport; it thrives on collaboration and establishing a solid community. Training partners work together, support, and push each other to reach new skill levels. In life, cultivating meaningful relationships and relying on the support of others can make all the difference. We learn to appreciate a collective effort’s strength and a united community’s power.

We are all journeying and learning together. My training partners, my teachers, and those who start after me are simultaneously on unique and joined paths. By giving to our partners, we receive back.

Jiu Jitsu is not about being better than someone else, it’s about being better than you used to be.

Renzo Gracie

Adaptability in the Face of Uncertainty

In Jiu Jitsu, opponents constantly change positions, apply different techniques, and present new challenges. Similarly, life is full of uncertainties and unexpected twists. Practising Jiu-Jitsu teaches us to adapt and respond effectively to ever-changing situations. We become more comfortable with uncertainty, more open to new ideas, and more resilient when faced with adversity.

Indeed, Jiu Jitsu teaches you to be comfortable in the uncomfortable. Both physically and mentally, I am learning that despite the circumstances I find myself in, I need to take a breath or two, compose myself and decide what my next course of action is. Even when you have a behemoth of a man kneeling on your chest, there is a way out; you need not to panic, then decide and act on a course of action.

In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.

Sun Tzu

The Journey, Not the Destination

Lastly, Jiu Jitsu teaches us to embrace the journey rather than solely focusing on the result. It encourages us to enjoy the process, to savour each step of the way, and to find joy in the practice itself. We often get caught up in chasing goals and results, forgetting to appreciate the present moment. Jiu-Jitsu reminds us that true fulfilment is pursuing growth, self-improvement, and personal development.

It’s not about your rank, your belt colour, or for me, even if I can ‘beat’ my opponent. It’s about being fully present, giving it all I can, and learning more about my limits, mentally and physically and directly growing them.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.

Explained: Tents and Moisture – Waterproofing, Seam Sealing, and More

0

Several factors can lead to a tent getting damp or downright soaking wet, and just because it’s dubbed ‘waterproof’ doesn’t exempt it from this. You’ve got your materials and your seam sealing to think about. Then there’s the issue of condensation inside the tent or morning dew outside of it. Even packing up a wet tent can lend it to unwanted moisture. Let’s dive into these factors and understand how to effectively manage them so that the next time you go camping, you’re not caught unawares by an unexpectedly moist tent.

Materials Matter: Choosing a Waterproof Tent

Alright, folks, let’s dig into the nitty-gritty now, shall we? When choosing your tent, the material is something you should not skim over. After all, it’s your only defence against the elements while tucked up in the wilderness.

Now, here’s the basic rule of thumb – the higher the Denier of your tent material, the more waterproof it’s likely to be. What’s Denier, you ask? Well, it’s a unit of measure for the linear mass density of fibres. Simply, it’s the thickness of your tent material. But remember, with a higher denier comes more weight, so balance is critical here!

Right off, we’ve got three heavy hitters when it comes to tent materials:

  • Polyester: A common favourite. It’s lightweight, relatively durable, and, most importantly, water-resistant! But watch out – it degrades faster under UV exposure, so it’s not the best for long-haul, sunny trips.
  • Nylon: Another popular choice. It’s also lightweight and more resistant to UV damage than polyester but not inherently water-resistant—no need to fret, though, as most nylon tents come with a water-resistant coating.
  • Canvas: The heavyweight champion here. It’s durable, water-resistant, and handles better under UV exposure. But it’s also pretty hefty and more complicated to set up. So, the canvas is usually better suited for a family camping trip rather than a solo hike.

Remember, each of these materials will have its share of pros and cons, so lining up a tent that matches your camping style is essential. If lightweight hiking is your thing, a polyester or nylon tent is a good call. However, a canvas tent could be your rugged companion if you’re more into laid-back camping and don’t mind a little extra weight!

Remember – even water-resistant tents can end up with water on the inside!

It’s a common assumption – you pitch your tent, ensure the rainfly is tightly attached, and protect yourself from any incoming rainfall, right? Wrong! Water has a sneaky way of finding its way into your tent, even if you’ve chosen a tent with a laudable water resistance rating. How so? Let’s get into the details.

How does water get inside a water-resistant tent?

You may wonder – if I have a water-resistant tent, why is water sneaking in? Well, the culprit is mostly the seams. Yes, those spots where different sections of your tent are stitched together. These points are prone to leakages by default, especially if not adequately sealed.

The role of a footprint

Another surprising entry point for water underneath your tent. It’s a common misconception that your tent won’t get wet if it’s not raining. Not necessarily so! Moisture from the ground can easily make its way into your tent, especially if you’re camping on damp or soggy terrain. A footprint – a specially designed protective underlay – can significantly help to block this upward moisture migration.

Condensation – the unseen enemy

You know what we haven’t touched on yet? Condensation. Imagine this scenario – you’ve sealed the seams, laid out a footprint, and yet wake up somewhat wet. This is often due to condensation when warm air meets the cold tent surface. It’s akin to your breath and body heat conspiring to dampen your camping experience.

Time to act!

Now we know why your tent might get wet even when it’s water-resistant, it’s time we also learned how to fix these issues. Keep your eye out for the subsequent sections, where we unveil practical, sure-fire tips and tricks to make your camping nights as dry and comfortable as possible.

The Importance of a Rainfly: Shielding Your Tent from Rain

You might wonder why some tents have a rainfly, and some don’t. A rainfly could be one of your best pals for rainy camping! The rainfly is the additional protection layer covering your tent, helping shield it from raindrops, sleet, and even the morning dew. Whether you want one on your tent will depend a little on how much you expect to use it in the rain. It’s nearly necessary on a year-round setup, while fair-weather camping (what most of us do) design is less dependent on one.

Choosing the Right Rainfly

Much like tent materials, not all rainflies are created equal. A high-quality rainfly should be weatherproof – constructed from coated polyester or nylon and painstakingly seam-sealed to prevent any sneaky water droplets from finding their way through. Generally, you want it to cover the entire tent – but – remain aware you don’t want to kill off any ventilation completely – otherwise, you will end up with another moisture management problem – condensation!

The Setup Sector

The setup also significantly affects how well your rainfly shields your tent from the elements. It should be taut – not too tight that it rips, but firm enough to repel water and prevent it from pooling. Pooling is when water accumulates on saggy sections of the rainfly, which could potentially apply pressure and cause the material to leak. Remember the motto: ‘a saggy rainfly leads to a soggy tent. This is also applicable to a tent without a rainfly.

Dual-Purpose Rainfly

It’s also worth mentioning that the rain fly isn’t only a shield against moisture and a layer of insulation. When fastened, it forms an air gap between itself and the tent, reducing the heat transfer rate and helping retain warmth within the tent. It’s like your tent wearing its own cosy little winter coat! Some tents also allow you to set up the rainfly, not the inner tent – creating a separate, lightweight shelter option.

In summary, don’t underestimate the power of a well-chosen, well-fitted rainfly. It’s a big player in the camping game, fending off rain and adding a layer of insulation. Of course, remember this isn’t a magic solution – other factors are at play in ensuring your tent stays as dry as possible. But as far as your first line of defence goes, the rainfly is your stalwart soldier on the frontline of the battle against moisture.

Seam Sealing: The Key to Keeping Dry

Seam sealing is one of those camping essentials that often gets overlooked, but believe me, it can make or break your camping experience—ever woke up in the middle of the night to a damp sleeping bag, wondering how water got inside despite your tent’s claim of being “waterproof”? It was likely nothing more than an unsealed or poorly sealed tent seam.

What’s a tent seam, and why does it need sealing?

Please have a look at your tent. Notice those lines where different pieces of fabric join together? They’re seams. And while they are necessary for the tent’s construction, they are also the most vulnerable points for moisture to sneak in. Hence, applying a waterproof substance (usually clear silicone sealant) to these seams is known as seam sealing, a kind of insurance against those pesky midnight water leaks.

DIY Seam Sealing

Some high-end tents come with factory-sealed seams (don’t assume; it would be indicated in the tent description), so you won’t have to lift a finger. However, price is not the only indicator here – ten-person and two-person tents cost the same – but only one is likely to be thoroughly sealed at that price. If you’ve grabbed a bargain or a second-hand tent, chances are you’ll have to wield the seam sealer yourself. It’s not as daunting as it sounds. You’ll need a tube of seam sealer designed for tents (most outdoor shops stock it) and a steady hand. Here’s how you do it:

  • Clean and dry the seams. Applying sealant over dirt or moisture will not end well.
  • Apply the sealant along the seams. Try to keep your lines neat, and cover all stitch holes thoroughly.
  • Let it dry. This can take up to 12 hours, so pick a good day for the task!

Checking Your Seams

Once it’s all dry, it’s time to check your work. A sprinkling of water across the seams should reveal any weak spots – if water beads up and rolls off, success! If it soaks through, it’s back to square one, I’m afraid. But an afternoon of prep can and will stave off countless restless, damp nights. Remember that it’s good practice to check your tent seams before each trip. Over time, even the best sealant can wear thin.

Condensation: Managing Moisture Inside Your Tent

So, we’ve discussed that condensation is the unseen enemy inside your tent. The million-pound question is, how do we prevent it? While you can’t eliminate condensation, managing and reducing its effects is possible. We need to understand how condensation forms in the first place.

The process is quite simple – when warm air hits the colder surface of your tent, it cools down and releases its moisture in the form of tiny droplets. This is what you see clinging to your tent walls in the morning. Not ideal, I know.

Use the Ventilation Features

First and foremost, all good tents will have some ventilation system – usually vents or mesh panels. These are not just there for good looks, folks. The vents allow the warm air to escape before it hits the cool tent fabric and decants its moist cargo, thus helping to reduce condensation. So, be sure to keep those vents open, especially during the night.

Keep Your Gear Dry

Another tip is to avoid bringing wet gear into your tent whenever possible. Wet clothes, wet dogs, or damp equipment will add to the moisture content inside the tent. It’s always a good idea to air out your clothes and remember to wipe down your stuff before bringing it inside.

Campsite Selection

Lastly, consider where you are setting up camp. A breezy bluff might help reduce condensation more effectively than a frigid valley or beside a babbling brook. The surroundings can make a big difference in the fight against condensation.

Remember, the goal is to manage condensation and keep it from becoming a problem, not to eliminate it – because that’s almost impossible. If you try the measures we discussed above, I bet your mornings will be less dewy inside the tent.

Morning Dew: How to Deal with Exterior Moisture

So you’ve woken up bright and early, ready to embrace another day outdoors – only to find your tent soaking wet from morning dew. In these situations, it’s not the heavy rain or leaking streams to blame; it’s the humble morning dew. Nothing puts a dampener (excuse the dry humour) on your camping spirits like a soggy tent. But fear not – here’s how to deal with the dreaded exterior moisture.

Understanding Morning Dew

Dew is formed when the air cools down overnight. The moisture from the air turns into water droplets and settles on your tent – and pretty much everything else. Hypothetically, you could sleep under a clear starry sky and still wake up with a damp sleeping bag. Fascinating. Now, let’s see how you can tackle this persistent foe.

Morning dew is moisture that forms on surfaces during the night when the temperature drops. Not all tents are fully waterproof, and their level of water resistance may vary.

Use a Tent Fly

First things first – if you haven’t already, invest in a quality tent fly. Your tent fly shouldn’t be just any old material – look for one with a decent water-repellent coating. This outer layer protects your tent from getting too wet by daybreak, and it’s a lifesaver when dealing with dew.

Dewing It Right with Proper Storage

So what do you do when you’ve packed up your tent only to find it’s still damp with dew? The key is practical storage. Never pack your tent away whilst it’s still wet. A damp tent is a breeding ground for mould and mildew, and trust me – you don’t want to learn that the hard way. If you can, hang your tent out to dry before packing it away. If that’s not possible, air it out as soon as you can when you get home.

All in all, morning dew, while unassuming, can prove to be quite a nuisance on camping trips. But by understanding what causes it and effective ways of dealing with it – you’ll keep your tent dry and your camping spirits high!

Packing Up a Wet Tent: Tips for Drying and Storing

So, you’ve had a brilliant adventure, but the weather had other plans, huh? I woke up and found the tent sodden. No worries; it happens to the best of us. Now, we will discuss packing a wet tent and a few tips for drying and storing. Get ready to take notes – as this could save your camping trip from future game of ‘dodge the mould’.

Packing Up a Soggy Tent – Can You Do That?

Well, you could, but it’s not particularly recommended – why? Well, moisture can cause mould and mildew to pop up and party. The damage can be considerably harmful not only to your tent but also to your health

But hey, what can you do if you have no choice? It’s not like any of us can control the weather, right? So, if you must pack up a wet tent, try to shake off as much water as possible before you start. Rack up those muscles, give it a good shake and get rid of as much water as possible. Mind the neighbouring tents, though!

Packing Wet and Setting Up Dry

When you get home, or somewhere where you have the space and time (and hopefully some sun), set up your tent again as if it is still enjoying its night under the stars. Let the sun (or wind or warm room) do its magic and evaporate the clinging water. Don’t forget to turn it inside out; water loves hanging out in the darnedest places.

Proper Storage Equals Longer Tent Life

Storage is the final door that your tent must pass through before its next adventure. Remember, don’t just stuff it back in its bag without a thorough drying. In addition to drying, keep it loosely stored when not in use to allow for ventilation, which helps prevent the unpleasant odours that can arise from constant dampness.

Research suggests that temperature-controlled, dry environments are the best for tent storage. Avoid places that are humid or too hot. Think about your closet, garage, or even under the bed – as long as it’s dry and cool, it’s good to go!

Beyond Rain: Other Causes of Tent Moisture

While much of our moisture-mitigation focus falls on rainfall and condensation, it’s essential to consider other elements that could contribute to a damp tent. Let’s delve into those potentially overlooked causes of tent wetness – the ones that can sneak up on us completely unannounced.

Rivers and Moist Ground

You might think that setting up your tent near a river would make for a picturesque and serene camping spot. While that’s not entirely wrong—the sound of a flowing river can be enchanting—you’d also be inviting a higher risk of dampness into your tent. Remember that moisture can rise from the ground. The more damp or moist the soil is – as is common near rivers – the higher the possibility of waking up in a soggy sleeping bag.

Spilled Drinks

We’ve all done it. You’re settling for a cosy night in the tent; reach for your hot chocolate or water bottle, and whoops! Spillage. Don’t underestimate the damage liquids can do inside a tent, mainly if it soaks into your sleeping bag or mat. It’s worth being extra careful with your drinks. Or even, crazy thought, enjoy them outside under the stars where spills can be quickly dealt with.

Wet Clothes and Gear

Believe it or not, wet clothes can thoughtfully contribute to the dampness in your tent. If you’ve been hiking all day in the rain or have taken a dip in a cold mountain stream, be mindful about bringing your wet clothes into the tent with you. They can significantly increase the moisture level, creating an unpleasant experience. Waterproof bags for damp gear are an excellent way to contain excess moisture.

Human Factors: Breathing and Sweating

You might not realise it, but breathing releases much moisture. Combine this with the heat from your body, and your tent can become surprisingly damp on the inside. The same goes for sweating. If you’ve been exerting yourself during the day and then hop into your tent without taking off your sweaty layers, you’ll add extra moisture to the environment.

As campers, we must remember these additional sources of moisture, remain vigilant and take necessary actions to ensure a dry, comfortable camping experience. A bit of forethinking can be the difference between waking up refreshed or soggy – I know which one I’d prefer!

So there you have it, folks. Tent moisture may be inevitable in your camping adventure, but its pesky effects can be effectively combatted with the right strategies. Knowledge is power, as they say – so go forth, armed and ready for the next rainy camping day. Happy tenting!

The time has come. :(

This truck has taken us on many adventures, and I am sure it will do the same for you.

Want a vehicle that drips oil, rattles your teeth out, takes its time up hills, causes shin cramps, doesn’t have a single straight panel and turns like a battleship? How about one that is fun to drive, turns heads everywhere, and guarantees daily conversations with total strangers? Have I got the vehicle for you!

NZ new; I purchased this from a gentleman in Christchurch and got to know it, driving it back up the country. By the time I got back up, I already had a list of things to do to it and, as any owner of an older truck will know, have never stopped doing stuff to it.

This is a 2001 Land Rover Defender – it’s an early TD5 10P engine with relatively low mileage compared to some.

So – roughly starting from the front –

  • Terrafirma Winch Bar with King’s Spotties
  • Upgraded LED main headlights
  • Engine Save Low Coolant Alarm
  • EGR Removed and Blanked off
  • New Master Clutch Cylinder
  • Straight Exhaust Pipe – this is not a quiet truck – somewhere between a tractor and a warplane!
  • Snorkel and Diff Breathers Extended (to top of snorkel)
  • Syncro Gearboxes Short Shifter Kit – this thing is incredible!
  • MUD Defender Console and Instrument Pod, Cubby Box with Molle Frame, Mesh Roof Netting and Cargo Netts
  • Upgraded ECU (from a newer TD5) that allows reprogramming, with Storm Tuning Stage 2 on it and Nanocom with TD5 licence (and holder to have on the dash)
  • GME XRS-330COB UHF Radio with roof-mounted folding bracket (so you can still get through Macca’s)
  • Yakama Platform System, with extra bar on front for lights and aerial. Mud Ladder and shovel holders, 3 x Knucklehead Bike holders (not all installed)
  • Kiwi Camping 270 2.5 Self-Supporting Awning – this thing is huge and awesome!
  • Technically, it is a nine-seater (early enough to be still allowed to have the inward-facing ones) – I have all the rear seats still, but they are currently pulled out
  • Replaced the fuel pump and regular not long after getting it – managed to find the noisest fuel pump in the world – it’s never skipped a beat, but it isn’t quiet
  • Set of BF Goodridge A/T KO2 Tyes on it
  • Full set of carpet mats, and the rubber ones to go over the top of them, including a rear area mat
  • There is probably more I can’t remember now; I will add them as I do!

I don’t think a single panel is straight on this truck. A couple of spots of paint are missing here and there, standard rust. Anyone looking at a Defender will know the deal.

The clutch and gearbox are good, but getting into gear is notchy. I am so used to it that I don’t notice it anymore. As mentioned, the fuel pump is noisy – it sounds like a supercharger running. This hasn’t/doesn’t affect performance – just picking its noisy bearings. However, you won’t hear much of this over the exhaust and general noise while driving on the open road!

It’s certainly not a ‘fast’ truck. It tends to like cruising around 90, but the stage 2 remap makes it feel much perkier than others. It hasn’t been used for a lot of towing, but when it’s had a boat or a trailer on the back, you hardly notice they are there.

I have pulled off the ‘company branding’ – but will leave the window stickers on there – easy enough to remove if you want.

I will get it professionally groomed shortly – but I figured I would put it up now to see if anyone wants to save me the trouble! 😉

Extra photos – the truck isn’t configured this way anymore…

The truck doesn’t come with the rooftop tent – that came off a while ago, and the front bumper has been upgraded since these earlier photos…

Vivo Primus Trail II FG Mens Barefoot Shoes

What switch from boots to barefoot shoes?

Why the shift from my favourite boots to barefoot shoes? I have (as you may already know) been a massive fan of the Lowa GTX8 boots. Still am. If you want a lightweight boot for kicking around in most sub-alpine off-track spots, I would still suggest these. However, when it comes to on-trail hiking and ‘easier terrain’ hunting, I’ve realised that full-sized boots might be an overkill. Not to mention heavy. Here’s where the barefoot shoes come in. Since making the switch, I’ve noticed some definite benefits. The barefoot design, like that of the Vivo Primus Trail II FG, is lighter, closer to the ground, and surprisingly comfortable. It might sound counter-intuitive, but shedding the boot bulk has done wonders for my agility and speed on and off the trail.

As we tread down the twisted trails of the great outdoors, the thump of hefty boots on the ground has been the soundtrack for many of us. Here’s the thing, though – the times, they are a-changin’. Let me introduce you to barefoot hiking shoes, a burgeoning market with some true game-changers. On my journey, I moved from the bulky, binding sensation of boots to the feeling of the ground beneath my feet, barely filtered, delivered by the Vivo Primus Trail II FG Mens in the resplendent Moonstone variety.

In the world of outdoor footwear, less is now more. The bare, minimal, featherweight Vivo Primus Trail II FG has been my partner-in-crime on recent hiking adventures.

Why did I make the switch, you ask? It’s a question of versatility and natural movement. But, possibly, the rush of liberation one gets with each footfall. You’d think I’d miss the sturdy, old-fashioned boot, wouldn’t you? Not a chance. In saying that – how many Sika hunters have you read about that ditch the boots and hunt in socks? While the noise of the sole itself is a factor – the feel of the ground under your feet and the resulting ability and tendency to walk more carefully is another significant part.

Also – I am aware the colourway I got this shoe in (Moonstone) – is probably not the best option for muddy/off-track work. In hindsight, I should have gotten something a little more muted – but it is an excellent excuse to try another model soon!

Key features of the Vivo Primus Trail FG

Upon first glance, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG Mens Moonstone might seem like any ordinary outdoor compatible shoe. However, don’t let its deceptive simplicity fool you; this barefoot runner is jam-packed with state-of-the-art features that are anything but ordinary. You don’t just have to take my word for it – I’ll walk you through some of its key features.

Outsole Design

The Vivo Primus Trail II FG boasts a so-called ‘Firm Ground’ outsole with low profile, multi-directional lugs. These lugs provide superb traction, keeping you steady on trail and pavement. Plus – and here’s the kicker – these are designed with a somewhat rigid sole that retains an excellent ground feel, bridging the gap between traditional shoes and an actual barefoot experience. No mean feat, I assure you! The 4mm lugs form part of the overall ‘height’ of 6.5mm – but the drop from heel to toe, in true barefoot fashion, is 0mm.

The outsole is slightly ‘firmer’ than some other barefoot options out there. But – if you are planning on going off track with these, that’s a good thing. In addition, the firmer, thicker outsole adds a little to the weight – this is on the ‘heavy’ end of the barefoot spectrum – but again, also means this shoe is a little more versatile.

Innovative Upper Material

The upper material of these shoes is made from a quick-drain and durable mesh, coupled with a no-sew support structure. This combination allows the shoes to remain light, even when they inevitably get wet in the great outdoors -gone are the days of hiking about with water-loaded shoes post-stream crossing -and provides admirable durability.

Barefoot Comfort

The shoe’s design closely mimics the natural foot shape, allowing your feet to move as nature intended -it’s like giving your toes a vacation! It also features a Pro5 patented, ultra-thin, puncture-resistant layer. It is an excellent feature for hiking and hunting, allowing you to tackle rugged terrain without fear of a sharp object ruining your day.

These feature some of the wider toe boxes out there – Kiwi’s trend towards having some of the wider feet. Is this a match made in heaven? Maybe.

Simple Lacing System

No one wants to be frustrated by complicated lacing systems when they are about to hit the trail, and Vivo gets this. The Vivo Primus Trail II FG features a speed lace-up system with a toggle, which makes getting in and out of these shoes a breeze. I am still figuring out why/how to tuck those laces – but – it’s nothing major.

Ethically-Built

If you’re a fan of ethical products, this shoe covers you. Vivo is committed to building shoes that are good for both the feet and the earth. Their sustainably sourced materials and processes make them a winner not only in performance but in ethos, too.

The Vivo Primus Trail II FG men’s moonstone is a thoughtfully designed shoe, incorporating practical and innovative features that make it a strong contender in hiking and running circuits.

How does the Vivo Primus Trail II FG compare?

Let’s get something straight – comparing the Vivo Primus Trail II FG to traditional hiking boots is like comparing apples to oranges. Or, more specifically, comparing a panther to a grizzly bear. Both are formidable in their own right, but they offer wildly different experiences. And in this instance, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG is our nimble ‘jungle cat’, if you will.

First off, traditional hiking boots are designed to be sturdy and firm to protect your feet from the elements. They often have a robust exterior with a thick, rigid sole, which doesn’t necessarily sit well with the ‘barefoot’ ethos of the Vivo Primus Trail II FG. Instead of constricting your foot to provide support, Vivo’s barefoot shoes encourage your feet to move naturally.

Think of it this way – it’s like removing the training wheels from your bicycle. Initially, giving up the structured bulk of traditional hiking boots might seem scary. But, freeing your feet to adapt to different terrains naturally, as you do with the Vivo Primus Trail II FG, can be quite a thrilling ride.

The Vivo Primus Trail II FG also scores over traditional boots in terms of versatility. These wonders can hold their own on roads and trails, something that most hiking boots can’t claim. They also lend themselves well to cross-training capacities, again scoring brownie points over traditional boots.

Finally, let’s discuss the weight (or the lack thereof) factor. Traditional hiking boots, unfortunately, tend to tip the scales on the heavier side (my Lowa’s are 1450g), whilst the Vivo Primus Trail II FG (250g) is as light as a feather. Consider this – that is sitting on the end of one of the longest levers in the body – being constantly swung back and forth.

To summarise, traditional boots and the Vivo Primus Trail II FG offer different ways to explore the terrain under our feet. Where one offers a high-guard protection bubble, the other facilitates a natural, svelte, and connected experience, allowing the adventurer in you to bond with the great outdoors. Whether you’re a bear or a panther kind of explorer, I suppose, is a choice you must make yourself!

Are the Vivo Primus Trail II FG suitable for all terrains?

Many outdoor enthusiasts often grapple with whether a one-size-fits-all approach works when it comes to footwear. In the case of the Vivo Primus Trail II FG, the answer is a resounding yes!

These revolutionary shoes, from muddy trails to polished pavements, prove their mettle in all terrains. The marvel lies in the outsole design – a firm grip that handles versatility like a piece of cake. Whether tackling rocky inclines with ninja-like agility or sprinting across the smooth concrete of urban jungles, these shoes stand by you.

Off-road, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG come into its own. The firm ground sole, with lugs designed to provide maximal grip and sensory feedback, is ideal for trail running or off-path adventuring. Don’t believe it? Just tread on a few pebbles and bask in the surreal experience of feeling the earth beneath your feet while keeping your feet cosy – no twisted ankles or painful pokey stones in sight. The soles happily grip to muddy and wet rocks yet still let you feel the undulations underneath.

On-road, it’s a pretty similar tale. Whether concrete or tarmac, these shoes don’t shy away from a challenge. They perform just as well on the roads as on the trails, making them an excellent cross-over option.

The only potential downside is that they might not be the best option in very wet conditions – they’re not waterproof. But then, every shoe is limited in this regard – they have a giant hole on the top of them. However, because they are essentially mesh, they drain quick and dry even quicker. No one likes the inevitable wet boots from regular stream crossings.

So, regarding terrain, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG is like those rare all-rounder friends who thrive wherever they go. Boggy marshes, check; rocky mountaintops, check; concrete city streets, double-check. What more could a foot ask for?

How does the barefoot design of the Vivo Primus Trail II FG affect stability and support?

Now, talk about stability and support – essential factors when weighing up your choice of footwear for the great outdoors. You might wonder how something termed ‘barefoot’ could offer enough of both to compete with your trusty hiking boots.

Firstly, let’s shed some light on barefoot design philosophy. The mantra is this – less is more. Strip away unnecessary padding and support, encourage your foot to move naturally, and you have a barefoot shoe. Sounds precarious, right? Not quite. It’s all about allowing your feet to do their job – move flexibly, provide natural shock absorption, and deliver on the sensory front. Trust me, your feet are more capable than you think!

When it comes to the Vivo Primus Trail II FG’s stability, it’s all about the outsole design. With optimal grip and pattering, these shoes easily handle various terrains. The shoes are designed to mimic the natural movement of your foot, which results in better balance and reduced risk of ankle twists and spills.

The support aspect is interesting – these shoes won’t cradle your foot like a traditional hiking boot. Instead, they’ll allow your foot to react naturally and as it’s supposed to – adjusting to uneven ground, balancing the body, and absorbing impact. A barefoot shoe like the Primus Trail understands this and gives your foot the freedom to do its job effectively.

So, in the grand scheme of outdoor adventures, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG offers stability and support, but in a very different way. It takes some getting used to – and your feet (and legs) will need time to strengthen up – but once your feet discover their newfound freedom, traditional boots might seem as restricted as a Victorian corset!

Do the Vivo Primus Trail II FG provide enough protection for hiking and hunting activities?

I hear you, fellow outdoor enthusiast – you’re wondering, “Will these minimalistic Vivo Primus Trail II FG shoes protect my precious toes from rogue roots and sneaky stones when I’m playing Davy Crockett?” Not to keep you in suspense, let me tell you firmly – yes, they do.

Despite their lightweight features, don’t be mistaken for thinking these barefoot trail shoes have scrimped-on protection. Yes, they’re both small, but one has significantly more bite.

The innovative upper material offers excellent durability against the abrasiveness of rocks and branches that might conspire to stub your toes or graze your ankles. Added to the tough compound used in the construction, these shoes have a persona of durability that any hardcore adventurer is bound to appreciate.

Moreover, the outsole design of the Vivo Primus Trail II FG is something of a quiet marvel. It features a firm grip that clings to the terrain as if it’s been taught mountaineering by a rugged old sherpa. The lugs on the sole protect against sharp objects while allowing you to engage with the terrain underfoot.

It’s no secret that these aren’t your typical ham-fisted boots. They respect natural foot anatomy with their thin soles, which might seem counter-intuitive when looking for protection. However, they don’t skimp on protecting you from potential puncture hazards, making sure you can navigate safely and naturally.

So, whether you’re stalking a deer through the undergrowth or trekking through mountain trails, rest assured – the Vivo Primus Trail II FG have your back or your feet.

Understandably – a shoe is never going to protect your ankles as much as a boot will. So – if you are regularly hopping across rolling scree – a boot might be a better option (barefoot boots exist).

Are the Vivo Primus Trail II FG suitable for long-distance hiking or hunting trips?

If you’re used to strapping on chunky boots for those long-distance hiking or hunting trips, shifting to barefoot shoes may seem like a leap of faith.

Long-distance hiking and hunting require endurance, and what can aid better than footwear that’s comfortable and impeccably lightweight? And that’s precisely what Vivo Primus Trail II FG brings. Whether it’s a long trek across a national park or a hunting expedition in remote woods, this pair promises to be your best adventure buddy without making you feel like you’re carrying two bricks tied to your ankles.

There are, however, a few things to keep in mind. Much like any new endeavour, transitioning from traditional hiking boots to barefoot shoes for long distances can be a bit of a journey. Barefoot shoes give your feet more freedom to move and adapt to the terrain, which is great for muscle development and natural movement, but it might take some getting used to. Consider a bit of a ‘breaking-in’ period. Start with shorter distances and gradually increase your mileage. Much like you wouldn’t run a marathon without training, right?

Also, Vivo Primus Trail II FG has been specially created to handle varied, demanding terrains. With an innovative outsole that provides excellent grip, you won’t be sliding around like a toddler on ice—no matter how wet or muddy the trail gets. But always remember, with a thinner sole than traditional boots, you’ll feel more of the ground beneath you.

In terms of durability, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG stands strong. With its ethically built construction that balances flexibility and toughness, this Moonstone model is a champ in the rough and tumble world of long-distance outdoor activities.

Can the Vivo Primus Trail II FG be used for outdoor activities besides hiking and hunting?

The Vivo Primus Trail II FG isn’t a one-trick pony by any means – oh, no! These trainers are as versatile as they come. Their barefoot design, endurance, and sturdy build make them an excellent companion for outdoor activities besides the typical hiking and hunting.

Where to start? Well, first off-trail running. These babies are just as impressive on light trails as on rocky terrains. Thanks to their first-rate traction, running on uneven surfaces is a breeze. So, for those in the mood for an excellent ol’ sprint across woodland trails, rolling hills, or gravel paths – you’re in good hands.

Remember the ethically built note? Well, it serves more than just moral goodness – the innovative material is quick to dry and breathable. That’s good news for all you aqua addicts. Whether it’s river trekking or canyoning– these shoes won’t shy away from a bit of moist madness. Not to mention, the lightweight design makes them a doddle to swim with!

Look no further if you’re looking for an all-rounder pair to join you for your outdoor yoga or CrossFit sessions. The wide toe box allows your toes to spread out for balance and stability – essential for many fitness activities. Yoga in the park, perhaps?

Finally, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG is just the ticket for the everyday adventurer. Whether walking the dog, trotting around town, or running to the shops, these shoes have your back. And, of course, your feet.

So, my outdoorsy pals – let’s not box these shoes in with just the hiking and hunting tag. The Vivo Primus Trail II FG is like that multi-talented mate who can, quite frankly, do it all. Better yet, they do it all well. And in some style, might I add!

I am happy training in them in the morning, working in them during the day and heading out in a walk in them off-track on the weekends.

In Summary

These things are great. I probably could have got them in a different colour – but – have been bit by the barefoot bug – and am considering a pair of ankle-covering boot options in the near future. Will be interesting to see if they bring the best of both worlds. In the meantime, the Vivo Primus Trail II FG is a true cross-trainer and a good option if you are looking at getting into the world of barefoot shoes.

The Digital Detox Experiment: Leaving Your Phone Behind

0

Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.

Christian Lous Lange

So, like many of you tormented souls out there seeking a break from the ceaseless pull of technology, I decided to experiment with a bit of digital detox. I started with small steps – leaving my phone at home while going for a walk, eating meals without the phone as an uninvited guest at the table, and deciding to keep my phone out of my pocket more.

In this connected world, it seems unthinkable, but let me paint you a picture of life unplugged. Imagine waking up and reaching out, not for your phone to browse social media updates, but gently stretching your arms out, feeling your heartbeat, the luxury of unhurried thoughts, slowly easing into the day.

By relegating my phone to a less accessible position, I’ve discovered a hitherto unknown sense of tranquillity, a new rhythm to life that isn’t dictated by ringtones or notifications. The idea was to reduce the constant interruptions and be free to enjoy the company of loved ones without any distractions. So, let’s delve into the nitty-gritty of this digital detox, the highs and the lows, and my journey to reclaim slices of life from the clutches of my smartphone.

Smartphone addiction is becoming a growing concern worldwide.

TheTemptation of Checking: How Removing Your Phone from Your Pocket Can Help

Just imagine—you’re out for a leisurely coffee with a friend, nestled comfortably in the cosy ambience of your favourite café. You’re both engrossed in that chat about that latest Netflix series when suddenly, a soft buzz. You know that dance. It’s the siren song of a notification. Your pocket pleads for you to reach in and pull out that pesky smartphone. It could be an urgent email, a trivial social media update, or a reminder to drink water. And despite wanting to stay fully present in the moment, this unrelenting desire to check that phone can, more often than not, hijack your attention. So, how do we resist the temptation? Simple—by not having the phone on us at all times.

By not carrying the phone in our pocket, we effectively truncate the signal pathway of digital distractions. It’s like putting a ‘do not disturb’ sign on your time: no phone, no notifications, no compulsive checking–simple. Sure, one might argue the utility of notifications, but more often than not, they’re just sprinkles of chaos peppering our peaceful existence.

We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media; the question is how well we do it.

Erik Qualman

The other pertinent gain is the noticeable decrease in screen time. The ‘out of sight, out of mind’ philosophy works wonders for our addiction to the glaring blues of our phone screens. When the phone isn’t constantly available (for instance, if it’s in your bag), the urge to unlock it every other minute for no apparent reason diminishes significantly.

But perhaps the most impactful perk from this little experiment is the rediscovery of human connection. When you no longer have your phone as a safety blanket to hide behind during awkward encounters or silences, you foster genuine face-to-face interactions, pulling you back to reality and enriching your relationships.

Your Watch is even worse!

A watch is usually the unassuming companion to your smartphone, quietly aiding you while nestled comfortably on your wrist. You might think it’s the perfect, less distracting substitute – it tells time, manages your alerts, and tracks daily activities. But hold on a minute, here’s the rub: wearable tech might just be – wait for it – worse than phones.

For starters, our wrist-bound devices vibrate with each new notification, causing us not simply to glance down but to react physically. Each buzzing notification sends a tremor down your arm, an irresistible call to look. And just like your phone, it’s always within reach – literally attached to you.

I’ve found that wrist alerts can be as intrusive as phone notifications and sometimes even more so. They’re constantly on your person, silently demanding attention with every motion. It’s innocuous initially – a glance here, a slight wrist tilt there. But soon, it escalates into a constant source of distraction as you find yourself checking obsessively, even when there are no notifications.

The more you use technology, the more it uses you.

Unknown

It’s the classic Pavlov’s dog situation. We’ve conditioned ourselves to respond to our smartwatch’s beck and call, being seduced by its vibration, dazzled by its bright screen, and hooked on the immediate gratification it provides.

So before you rush to replace your pocket dweller with its wrist-bound counterpart, take a moment to ponder. You might jump out of the frying pan and into the fire. And we all know how that turns out, don’t we?

Unplugged and Inspired: How a Phone-Free Existence Can Spark Creativity

Have you ever mindlessly scrolled on your phone, caught up in a whirlpool of trending hashtags, liked photos and shared tweets? Well, you’re not alone. We’re all guilty of it on some level. For all its perks and progress, the digital world is a notorious creativity killer. And so, my recent experiment — going phone-free — has me stumbling upon a surprising fact. Removing your phone from your pocket can help mobilise that slumbering creative genius inside.

The constant pinging of notifications, the flashing screen luring you in for that one-quick-check (a myth, if there ever was one!): they all interrupt the flow of our thoughts. There’s a term for it: cognitive bandwidth. Simply put, our brains have a finite amount of processing power, and every unnecessary distraction eats into this. A phone-free existence leaves our minds more space to process, reflect, and create.

Excessive smartphone use has been linked to increased stress and anxiety levels.

And let’s not forget the enriching experiences we’re missing while stuck in a digital trance. Being unplugged from the digital sphere and tuned into the real-world physical sphere creates room for boredom, which often acts as a precursor to our most imaginative ideas. Who knows what sparks could be kindled from a quiet walk in the park, a casual chat with a stranger, or even just staring out of a window?

Without my phone acting as a digital crutch, I was more deliberate about my choices. I started to carry a book, unleash my doodling skills, or sit back and people-watch. It’s almost ironic how we fear missing out on what’s happening online and, in the process, miss out on the world unfurling around us.

So, here’s my humble request. Take the plunge and go phone-free for a while. Let your brain breathe and give those rusty creative cogs some grease. And when you stumble upon that brilliant idea or capture that novel experience, don’t forget to jot it down–done the traditional way. Pen and paper have their old-world charm, but we’ll get to that later. Stay tuned.

Navigating Without a Phone: Rediscovering the Joy of Maps

As a society, we’ve become incredibly dependent on smartphones for practically everything – especially navigation. We’ve traded our natural sense of direction and interest in exploring for the convenience of always having a personal guide in our pockets. But let me tell you – there’s a whole world filled with surprises and new experiences waiting to be discovered when you don’t have Google Maps leading the way.

Android Auto: The on-road companion

Now, I acknowledge this isn’t entirely ‘disconnected,’ – but – I have started using Android Auto in the car, and I think it’s something we should all seriously be utilising where we can.

I look at my phone while driving. You look at your phone when driving. Police look at their phone when driving. We shouldn’t; we all know this. But the pull is strong. Putting it in a ‘hands-free cradle’ – as mine is, is only marginally better – because while you don’t ‘hold’ it – you are likely still looking at it instead of the road.

Now, I plug it in via USB, put it in my glove compartment box and close the lid. I may start locking the lid with the key that needs to go into the ignition—nuclear option.

Android Auto intentionally provides you with a majorly limited interface designed to distract less, allowing you to focus on the road. I can still use the online GPS function of the phone – Google Maps with its traffic updates, Spotify, Podcasts, the phone and basic messaging.

But it’s not conducive to browsing the internet, messaging mates or anything else. The restriction keeps your focus where it should be on driving.

Physical Maps and GPS Units: Old-School is Cool

On foot, it’s not like I am short on navigation items already. I have the Fenix on my wrist, multiple GPS units I have used over the years, and, shock horror – I can still use a map and compass!

In fact, for bush use – I have long preferred to use the watch to give me a Topo50 Location if needed, but I mainly use the physical map to find my way.

For more local walks, where I might need to use it for reference, it is more fun to open up a big old paper map and look at it with someone. There is something more tangible and tactile about the physical maps still.

Another option is to figure out where you are going and hold it in your working memory instead of offloading it to the phone!

Being More Aware: The Unexpected Perk

One of the most notable changes since ditching my phone as a navigational tool is how much more aware I’ve become of my surroundings. Without the distraction of incoming messages blinking on my screen, I’ve been – you’ll laugh at this – noticing trees, marvelling at the architecture, and even making the occasional eye contact with passersby. Rediscovering the world through your eyes rather than a screen is refreshing.

Almost everything will work if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.

Capturing Moments: Embracing Analog Photography in the Digital Age

The pixels of digital photography have taken over our photo albums at lightning speed. Our mobile phones are constantly at our fingertips, ready and poised to capture every laugh, every twinkle in the eye, each sunlit smile. But amidst this flash of digital rapidity, let’s not forget there was once a time when photography was more than a snap-and-forget routine—it was a physical, tangible art, a piece of nostalgia you could feel and touch. Yes, I am talking about the good old film camera.

Now, I am not suggesting that you go back to a film camera (though cool if you do) – I am more meaning the DSLR or newer Mirrorless dedicated cameras (though I still like a viewfinder for reasons I will go into)

Going phone-free might put a damper on your Instagram stories and impulsive selfies, but it could bring you back to the era of ‘analog’ photography. In this era, taking a photograph was a mindful activity, a pause and not a careless click.

Observing from the Viewfinder

Here’s a fun experiment—try looking at the world through the viewfinder of a camera for a change. You’ll find it’s not the same as squinting at your phone screen. The scene feels more real, more vivid. Focusing and adjusting the aperture forces you to take a moment to truly observe and appreciate your surroundings before you immortalise the scene. It insists on being present in the here and now—a refreshing break from the auto-mode of our digital lives.

So, while our mobile phone cameras have their perks—offering us high-resolution image capturing and editing options at our fingertips—reverting to ‘traditional’ cameras can be a delightful slice of nostalgia, an ode to the yesteryears. It’s not just about capturing moments—it’s about living in them. It’s about forming a connection with the scene beyond the lens, about appreciating the magic of anticipation, of surprise.

Writing it Down: Pen and Paper

I feel particularly nostalgic when I reach out for a good old pen and paper instead of my sleek, shiny smartphone. After all, we’ve chatted about the advantages of a sturdy notebook before at Every Bloke Should Carry a Notebook.

Scribbling vs Typing: Why it Works

You see, it’s all relatively simple. The act of writing things down, of physically scribbling your thoughts onto a tangible piece of paper—well, there’s a sort of magic to it. Research suggests it improves memory and comprehension and is a mighty way of freeing up mental resources and fostering creative thinking.

The Heart of the Matter: What I Miss and What I Don’t

The Beauty of Pen and PaperThe Limitations of Letting go the Phone
Freer thinking and problem-solvingLack of copy-pasting option, especially for long texts
Better retention of the informationInstant saving and easy retrieval of notes may not be possible
Reduced interruptions and distractionsNo reminders or alarms

Sure, the familiar ease of typing in my phone notes came with its own set of comforts, but I must say, I relish the renewed clarity and focus that jotting my thoughts down on paper affords me.

So, the next time you’re about to stuff that phone in your pocket, give a nod to the humble notebook. You might be surprised that it’s just what you need to jolt your mind into action.

Using smartphones before bedtime can disrupt sleep patterns.

The Alarm Clock

Actually, this is one I changed a long time ago – it’s been years since I slept with my phone beside my bed. This is for two reasons – firstly, it’s now clear that having a phone next to you will disrupt your sleep. Be it blue light or just the stimulation at night when you wake up and reflectively reach for your phone to check Facebook updates? Why? Secondly, an actual alarm clock is a better job tool. It’s reliable, functional, and doesn’t carry the risk of distracting you with a bombardment of notifications first thing in the morning. With this slight shift, waking up has become less about diving into digital distractions and more about greeting a new day’s fresh opportunities. Oh! Did I miss out on any meaningful notifications? No. I see; it’s just another flashy sale on an e-commerce app and some birthday reminders! Before my digital detox, the first 20 minutes of my day used to go in scrolling aimlessly; now, it’s full of mindful, peaceful moments of just me, my coffee and the quiet morning.

Oh. And the Alarm Clock – I still use my phone – it’s just in another room – so I have to get up to turn it off. I get up, put on the kettle, drink a glass of water… and, surprise, the day has started, and that snooze button isn’t an option anymore. And by ‘peaceful’ – I mean stretching or a workout.

The fear of not permanently being able to be contacted.

No. You are not GHOSTING people if you don’t immediately respond

Let’s face it: we live in a society where people expect an instant response to their messages. When we don’t reach back immediately, they tend to think we’re ghosting them. Yet instant connectivity was not always the norm—the shift has sneaked up on us, subtly altering our perception of expected human interaction timing.

Part of the anxiety stemming from a phone-less pocket comes from this fear of ghosting — the terror of being unable to respond at once. We’re leaving people in the lurch, hanging on our digital tendrils as they anxiously await our response. But let’s take a step back — are we really stranded without our phones? Or, to put it another way: By leaving our phones behind, are we actually ghosting people?

The answer is a resounding no.

Over-reliance on smartphones can negatively impact face-to-face social interactions.

We are not breaking any social contracts; we’re merely readjusting them, moving away from an ‘always available culture’. Remember those days before mobiles came in — when you would call people on their landlines? If they weren’t home, you’d leave a message, and they would respond when possible. Humans could function entirely well then, and we can do it now. No rule says you must answer a text within five minutes. If it’s essential, they’ll call; if you’re not around, they’ll leave a message or call back.

Not having your device on you at all times can improve relationships. We must re-learn the art of conversation, anticipation, and delayed gratification. Have you ever noticed how seeing someone after a while makes the conversation much livelier? A sense of excitement is entertainingly absent when we’re in constant digital touch.

Instant gratification takes too long.

– Carrie Fisher

Indeed, Ms Fisher was correct. Running towards an ‘always on’ culture deprives us of the thrill and charm of delayed gratification. The ‘missed calls’ and ‘texts to reply to’ can inspire fantastic anticipation. And to those waiting for your response on the other side, it conveys a message too — that you respect your time and won’t be immediately available always. It eventually helps set healthier boundaries where the expectation of an instant response is moderated, forging a better balance for all.

So, next time you leave your phone behind, rather than feeling like a ghost, feel free. Free from conditioned responses and free to live life at your tempo. You’re not ghosting – you’re simply ‘being’ and encouraging everyone else to recalibrate their expectations.

Use your PC instead of your phone

I am aware it’s just possible to spend a lot of time ‘doom-scrolling’ through your social media feeds on a Computer. But. There is still quite a difference between that and permanently having the ability to do so in your pocket. In addition, I am more productive when doing social media work on my PC than on my phone. With the help of a larger screen, I can manage multiple tabs simultaneously and have an easier time typing out responses. It’s a small change but adds up over time – fewer disruptions and less time lost to the smartphone abyss. And the best part? I can put it away when I’m done, closing the door on the digital world for a bit. This way, I get to decide when to engage with the virtual, rather than being led by the constant pinging of my phone.

Unfortunately, indeed, things need to be still done on the phone (like updating stories for your social feed) – and – like many creators – I feel the constant tug and challenge of wanting/needing/thinking I need to be updating my social feeds to be relevant constantly. But. I guess here is the rub – I want to be known for long-form, in-depth articles about subjects – not what I had for lunch. So – what am I trying to achieve? It’s a balance between the need to stay digitally connected and the desire to delve deeper into my passion – crafting well-thought-out pieces that resonate on a level that no fleeting Instagram story can. Perhaps it’s about prioritising quality over quantity, substance over superficiality, and, in the process, allowing myself to experience life beyond the confines of a small screen.

Mindfulness in Motion: How Removing Your Phone from Your Pocket Enhances Awareness

There’s something almost meditative about pulling your phone from your pocket and pouring through your latest notifications—the vibrating buzz, the glowing screen, the short-lived satisfaction of responding instantly. But what if I told you that these seemingly innocuous habits could smother your ability to be truly present?

Let me paint you a picture: Imagine you’re walking through a park. The leaves rustle overhead; birds sing their unique melodies, and a gentle breeze is sighing through your hair. But rather than savouring these sensory delights, your attention is on your phone, fingers mindlessly scrolling through your newsfeed. In this scenario, are you really ‘in’ the park, experiencing it, being present? Probably not.

Sweeping digital devices aside allows us to unlock new levels of sensory awareness. It’s like the Mayor of Mindfulness Town just granted you the key to the city—welcome to the world of heightened perception.

Swapping touchscreen navigation for real-life navigation can deliver wonderfully unexpected dividends. Did you ever notice that architecturally exciting building on your way to work when your eyes were glued to your phone? Probably not. But it’s been there all this time, waiting for you to admire its charm.

Or perhaps that cheeky squirrel scampering up a tree, the vibrant red flowers blooming on the roadside, or the cloud that looks startlingly, funnily like your favourite cartoon character. These largely unnoticed treasures of daily life become a great joy; all you need to do is release your smartphone stranglehold.

With your mobile safely stored away, you engage with your surroundings, enhancing your connection with the world. You step into the ‘here’ and ‘now,’ letting every sensory detail wash over you. And let me tell you, friend, that life lived in this vivid panorama is immensely gratifying. You are not just surviving from one notification to another; you are flourishing, luxuriating even in the heady cocktail of reality.

Removing your phone from your pocket is not merely about reducing digital clutter—it’s an invitation to mindfulness. It’s a chance to engage more mindfully with your experiences and appreciate each moment’s fullness as it unfolds right before your eyes. Ssssshh… Do you hear that? It’s life calling. Be sure to answer.

Putting Your Phone Away While Eating: Prioritising Real Connections

Next on the digital detox journey, let’s mull over our dining tables. Isn’t it a gathering spot for substantial conversations, a platform for bonding, and a haven for delicious food? But wait, what’s that blinking and buzzing in the middle of the table? Yes, you’ve guessed it right—it’s a phone—my phone, your phone, apparently everyone’s phone!

But why? Have we forgotten the joy of connecting with people right across the table? With this question in mind, I embarked on a quest to banish phones from the dining table and found some remarkable results.

Do not be a slave to your phone; let it be your servant. You are the boss. Allow your phone to understand that your meal times are strictly off-limits.

Eating Without Distractions: Phoneless and Fancy-free

I know it sounds a touch daunting, but believe me, putting your phone away while eating is like opening a door to a more quality life. No notifications to interrupt your meal, no need to multitask—you, the food, and the company, that’s what matters.

Positive Talks: With no phone to serve as a distraction, you engage in wholesome conversations. Remember those days when we used to talk about our day, our dreams, or even the latest gossip around the water cooler? It’s time to bring those back!

Mindful Eating: You learn to appreciate the food you eat. We forget how fortunate we are to have a hearty meal in front of us while flipping through Facebook or Twitter feeds. Let’s savour our pasta, not posts.

Improved Relationships: When you dedicate your attention to the people around you by putting your phone aside, you convey a message—”You matter to me.” This can significantly improve the dynamic of your relationships.

But wait, What About the Urgent Calls or Messages?

Granted, there are some limitations, but there are ways around them as well. Imagine this—your primary device won’t be at your immediate disposal, but that doesn’t mean you’re going off-grid completely.

Ponder upon this, my friends—

Eating without the constant chime of your phone, are you ready to savour this new-found freedom? Believe me, the experience is liberating!

The Unexpected Benefits: What You Might Discover When You Leave Your Phone Behind

Lunchroom conversations

I recently talked with a couple of co-workers about the inherent differences in childhoods, individuality, robustness, and culture – from the differing viewpoints of a NZ-born European and a Chinese and Japanese viewpoint. This enlightening and enjoyable conversation would not have happened if I had been staring at my phone!

These moments of raw humanity remind me of the importance of being truly present in each interaction. Would such conversations happen in your life if your eyes were fixated on a screen?

You are quicker in the bathroom!

You wouldn’t expect it, but this is a truth universally acknowledged – without your phone, you’re lightning quick in the bathroom. Remember those minutes (or hours?) spent scrolling mindlessly, utterly oblivious to the real world? No more! Your bathroom visits swiftly become exercises in efficiency.

Did you know aside from being a distraction, using your phone in the bathroom is also a bit of a hygiene no-no? Our hands are not the cleanest in such an environment, and those substances – you don’t want to give them a free stroll on your phone surface. So, without your phone in hand, you’re not merely quicker – you’re also cleaner and, therefore, healthier.

So, humour me. Try to leave your phone behind when you’re heading for a bathroom break. You’d be amazed at how those stolen minutes add up, giving you extra time to spend elsewhere (hopefully not on your phone!). Plus, what is your cleanliness level? Up a notch!

The Limitations of a Phone-Free Lifestyle: Exploring the Challenges and Solutions

Adopting a phone-free lifestyle is no easy feat. I know it, you know it. We’ve grown so accustomed to our digital companions that managing without them feels like being stranded on a desert island. It’s not all coconut cocktails and stunning sunsets; I’ll give you that. There are limitations, but no problem can’t be solved if you aren’t afraid of a bit of improvising.

The Challenge of Disconnection: Firstly, the most prominent issue is the sudden drop in connectivity. No longer being able to instantaneously Google your random queries or have real-time chats with friends halfway across the globe can be jarring. “What’s the capital of Mongolia?” I found myself asking nobody in particular during a pub quiz. “Hang on, let me Google it” wasn’t an option. But remember, folks, it’s a limitation, not a deal-breaker.

Missing out on App Magic: We can’t ignore the sheer convenience mobile apps provide either. Whether it’s a fitness tracker, music streaming, or mobile banking apps, they all integrate seamlessly into our lives, leaving noticeable gaps when we try to unplug. Do I miss tracking my steps and heart rate? Well, not really. It’s extra data, but are you doing much with it? Do you go for a long walk if your steps are not up to your 10k target?

I still need to do certain things on the phone, but do I need the ability to do them on demand, at any time, day or night?

In Case of Emergencies: Then there’s the safety aspect. Having a mobile device within reach does offer a certain degree of security. The thought of being stranded somewhere without a phone to call for help is unsettling. Yet, I can’t deny that this nagging fear made me mind my surroundings and plan my routes more carefully.

But The Solutions are Endless: But let’s not wallow in digital despair, shall we? Instead, let’s take these challenges head-on. Limit Internet queries to when you’re near a computer or ask someone else. For the app magic, rediscover the virtues of a good old MP3 player or put it on the local radio. As for safety, carry a small physical map or note essential addresses and phone numbers in a pocketbook. Dont worry. The phone still lives in the car! It’s never that far away if I need it.

So yes, the limitations of a phone-free lifestyle are real, but every challenge offers an opportunity for creativity. The solutions might not be as shiny and enticing as the latest smartphone with bells and whistles, but they can get the job done. Plus, the sense of accomplishment that comes from navigating life with resourcefulness and resilience? Now, that’s something no app can offer!

The true price of anything you do is the amount of time you exchange for it.

Henry David Thoreau

This isn’t easy.

Don’t get me wrong, I fail every day at this project. I still habitually grab my phone to check for any missed notifications because I turned them off. It’s pretty surreal just how habitual and ingrained this behaviour is, and I am consciously aware of it now! Understanding the depth of our digital addiction is the first step towards meaningful detox. The journey may be fraught with initial failures, but each moment of awareness brings the possibility of change closer. So, here’s to failing forward towards a less digitally constricted life!
